Job Summary
The Manager, Alternative Business will report to the General Manager, Commercial Services, and will play a central role in driving KenGen’s diversification strategies. The job holder will oversee the development, implementation, and monitoring of diversification projects, ensuring that they align with the company’s technical, financial, and regulatory requirements.
This role is highly strategic and requires a leader capable of orchestrating large-scale initiatives, evaluating project performance, and building strong partnerships with stakeholders, including government agencies, investors, and both private and public institutions. The successful candidate will also provide technical and commercial guidance to implementation teams while managing divisional staff and resources effectively.
Duties and Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Manager, Alternative Business include, but are not limited to:
- Strategy Development & Implementation
- Develop, implement, and periodically review the company’s diversification policies and strategies to drive business growth and expansion.
- Identify, evaluate, and prioritize opportunities for diversification projects that align with KenGen’s long-term objectives.
- Project Development & Execution
- Lead the identification, planning, and execution of diversification projects in compliance with technical, regulatory, and financial requirements.
- Oversee the development of the KenGen Green Energy Park, ensuring timely and efficient project rollout.
- Manage the implementation of Commercial Drilling and Consultancy Contracts, ensuring adherence to quality and commercial standards.
- Risk Management
- Identify, assess, and manage risks associated with diversification initiatives.
- Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to ensure successful project outcomes.
- Stakeholder Engagement
- Map and manage key stakeholders, including government agencies, investors, development partners, and private entities, to foster collaboration and ensure smooth completion of projects.
- Foster partnerships with both public and private sector organizations to advance the realization of diversification initiatives.
- Monitoring & Reporting
- Monitor the implementation of diversification projects, suggesting corrective measures where necessary.
- Provide regular updates and progress reports on project performance, outcomes, and impact to senior management.
- Technical & Commercial Leadership
- Provide technical and commercial guidance to project teams to ensure alignment with corporate goals and industry best practices.
- Ensure projects meet expected outcomes in terms of innovation, revenue generation, and sustainability.
- Divisional Management
- Manage divisional staff, ensuring effective performance management, skills development, and alignment with organizational goals.
- Prepare, oversee, and manage the divisional budget to ensure efficient allocation of resources.
Person Specifications
For appointment to the role of Manager, Alternative Business, the successful candidate must meet the following requirements:
- A minimum of twelve (12) years’ experience in the energy sector, with at least four (4) years at middle management level in a large organization.
- A Master’s degree in Engineering, Energy Management, Project Management, or Business Administration from a recognized institution.
- A Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field from a recognized university.
- Membership in a relevant professional body with applicable qualifications.
- Successful completion of a management course (minimum four weeks) from a recognized institution.
- Proficiency in computer applications.
- Strong knowledge of key regulations in energy, finance, procurement, and governance.
- Fulfillment of the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
