The Transdisciplinary Learning Initiative (TDLI) is an innovative programme within Biovision Africa Trust designed to connect university students from various academic disciplines with agroecology and agrobiodiversity experts. By fostering collaboration between academic institutions, practitioners, and stakeholders, TDLI aims to strengthen knowledge exchange and co-creation of solutions to real-world challenges in agriculture and the environment.
Reporting directly to the Head of Farmer Communication Programme (FCP) & Support Functions, the Project Manager will lead the establishment of a fully functional TDLI Secretariat. The role will involve shaping strategic direction, coordinating multi-stakeholder activities, securing funding, and ensuring that TDLI becomes a sustainable and impactful initiative for years to come.

About Biovision Africa Trust
Biovision Africa Trust (BvAT) is a not-for-profit organization established in Kenya in 2009 by the Biovision Foundation for Ecological Development in Switzerland. The Trust operates under the umbrella of the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) in Nairobi.
BvAT’s vision is to sustainably improve the lives of people across Africa while safeguarding the environment. About the Transdisciplinary Learning Initiative (TDLI)
The TDLI connects graduate students from diverse disciplines with agroecology experts, industry stakeholders, and policymakers. It emphasizes knowledge co-creation, which ensures that solutions are both practical and scientifically sound. The initiative helps academic institutions prepare students to design, communicate, and collaborate effectively in solving complex socio-technical challenges.
TDLI’s approach recognizes that no single sector or discipline can address challenges in food systems and ecological agriculture. By fostering collaboration, the initiative builds stronger agroecological networks regionally and internationally, positioning future leaders to address pressing environmental and agricultural issues.
Job Purpose & Scope
The Project Manager will lead the Transdisciplinary Learning Initiative, establishing and managing its Secretariat. The successful candidate will design structures, operational functions, and linkages that enable the programme to thrive. They will also work to secure funding, develop curricula, build institutional partnerships, and ensure effective implementation of TDLI’s activities.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
The Project Manager will be expected to perform the following:
- Establish and Manage the Secretariat:
Create and coordinate a functional TDLI Secretariat with a clear structure, operational roles, and institutional linkages. - Programme Design and Institutionalization:
Work closely with academic and training institutions to design a three-year programme (2026 onwards) guided by a theory of change, programme objectives, and structured work plans. - Curriculum Development:
Develop TDLI course structures and training modules, including:- Guides for trainers and facilitators
- Participant handbooks and workbooks
- Audio-visual aids such as presentations
- Assessment tools for learners
- Guidelines for Transdisciplinary Approaches:
Formulate principles, methodologies, tools, and best practices for applying transdisciplinary approaches in agroecology and related fields. - Implementation of Courses:
Coordinate the rollout of TDLI agroecology courses in collaboration with participating universities and training institutions. - Knowledge Sharing Events:
Organize high-level webinars and forums focusing on emerging issues in agroecology, policy developments, and key sectoral conferences. - Funding and Resource Mobilization:
Partner with the Business Development Department to secure adequate funding for the comprehensive implementation of TDLI’s current and future phases. - Alumni Network Development:
Establish and maintain a vibrant alumni network, facilitating professional exchange, mentorship, and long-term engagement. - Stakeholder Engagement and Networking:
Build strong linkages with agroecology networks across Eastern Africa and internationally to enhance TDLI’s visibility and effectiveness. - Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting:
Document and communicate TDLI’s progress through monthly, biannual, and annual reports. Prepare impact summaries for diverse stakeholders.
Education, Experience & Competencies
The successful candidate should possess:
- At least a Master’s degree in Agriculture, Ecology, Biology, Environmental Sciences, One Health, or a related field.
- A minimum of five years’ relevant experience in ecologically organic agricultural programmes and projects.
- Proven experience in fundraising and successful grant proposal development.
- Demonstrated ability to work with East African universities and stakeholders in agroecology.
- Strong understanding of transdisciplinary approaches and the ability to engage faculty across departments.
- Experience in developing and managing training programmes, workshops, and webinars.
- Capacity to coordinate logistics, including venue booking, scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Strong stakeholder relationship management skills.
- Competence in budget management, financial reporting, and donor communications.
- Familiarity with Eastern African higher education systems is an added advantage.
