As part of the Turkana regional team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the successful implementation of water projects across Turkana and beyond. Working under the supervision of the Regional Manager Turkana and with guidance from the Lead Engineer, the Technician will undertake technical assignments that directly impact the lives of thousands of people.

This role is not only about technical skills but also about service, leadership, and faith. The position is based in Turkana County, Kenya, with frequent travel to remote areas across Kenya and occasionally to surrounding countries.

Job Description – Technician – Turkana

General Responsibilities

  • Maintain a strong Christian witness and serve as a role model of servant leadership in the organization, with partners, and within the communities served.

Specific Responsibilities

As a Technician, you will be responsible for a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:

  1. Community Mobilization & Oversight
    • Mobilize and supervise community volunteers or subcontractors during project preparation.
    • Support construction activities such as shallow wells, trenches for pipework, and housing for water treatment systems.
  2. System Installation & Construction
    • Install and maintain water treatment systems including pumps, filters, chlorinators, and solar panels.
    • Set up water storage tanks, piping networks, tap stands, electrical cables, and conduits.
    • Oversee contractors to ensure high-quality standards in construction, plumbing, electrical, and fabricated structures.
  3. Training & Capacity Building
    • Train local system operators on daily operations and maintenance of water systems.
    • Guide operators in monitoring chlorine levels and ensuring safe water quality.
  4. Testing & Assessments
    • Conduct water quality and yield testing for boreholes, wells, and springs.
    • Perform survey measurements and community assessments to determine system needs.
    • Interpret and apply engineering drawings in project implementation.
  5. Reporting & Documentation
    • Prepare timely and accurate project reports, including monthly progress updates, assessment reports, and follow-up documentation.
    • Provide photographic evidence and detailed records for accountability.
  6. Operations & Maintenance Support
    • Provide technical support for completed projects by troubleshooting operational issues.
    • Maintain material records and ensure that quality materials are used on all sites.
  7. Compliance & Policy Adherence
    • Comply with organizational policies, procedures, and safety standards.
    • Ensure that all assigned work aligns with Water Mission’s engineering standards.
  8. Disaster Response & Flexibility
    • Provide support in disaster relief projects when required.
    • Be available to travel to remote project sites within Kenya and occasionally abroad.
  9. Other Duties
    • Carry out additional assignments as delegated by the Regional Manager or Lead Engineer.

Requirements

To excel in this role, applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Strong alignment with Water Mission’s Statement of Faith and its core values of Love, Excellence, and Integrity.
  • Fluency in both English and Swahili (written and spoken).
  • A Diploma/Higher Diploma in engineering (Civil, Environmental, Electrical, or Electro-mechanical).
  • T1 or T2 EPRA solar license (preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a technical field, ideally in water systems.
  • Hands-on technical skills in plumbing, welding, electrical systems, or construction.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and drafting software (AutoCAD, PowerCADD, SolidWorks/ProE).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts cross-culturally.
  • Project planning and management skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams, contractors, and volunteers.
  • Willingness to reside in Turkana County and travel to remote communities as needed.
  • Legal authorization to work in Kenya without sponsorship.
