The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) is seeking qualified, motivated, and professional individuals to join its team in Kenya as Range Wardens. Based primarily in the Laikipia Training Areas with possible assignments to other training locations across the country, the Range Warden role is central to maintaining safe training environments for operational and support personnel.

This full-time position (40 hours per week on a flexible rolling schedule) offers more than just a job—it is a chance to contribute to safety, environmental stewardship, and operational success. About the Role

As a Range Warden, you will play a critical role in ensuring that training areas remain safe and operational. Reporting to the Range Warden Team Leader (South), you will support the implementation of safety measures and oversee a wide range of operational activities. The position calls for someone who can demonstrate initiative, teamwork, and effective communication skills.

The role is structured around three core competences that will guide both your daily duties and your professional evaluation:

  • Communicating and Influencing
  • Managing Customers & Suppliers

Your duties will include both primary and secondary responsibilities, covering clearance operations, safety enforcement, fire containment, and direct engagement with wildlife and environmental issues.


Key Responsibilities

Primary Duties

As part of your core role, you will:

  • Training Area Clearance: Conduct clearance of all training areas before exercises commence. This includes sentry duties when ordered by your Team Leader or Senior Manager.
  • Helicopter Clearance Flights: Undertake aerial clearance duties to ensure training zones are safe from hazards prior to helicopter operations.
  • Fire Containment: Actively engage in fire prevention, containment, and overwatch tasks to mitigate wildfire risks in training zones.
  • Cordon and UXO Response: Establish cordons and conduct overwatch when unexploded ordnance (UXO) is discovered, in line with Range Standing Orders (RSOs).
  • Operational Duties: Serve as an operator in Nyati Range Control, OB Swara, and the Holding Area, ensuring adherence to operational and safety protocols.
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Maintain and operate Safe Place to Train vehicles in accordance with BATUK Motor Transport Standing Orders.
  • Facilities Upkeep: Take responsibility for the cleanliness and maintenance of Range Warden accommodations, ablutions, and rest areas.

Secondary Duties

In addition to your primary responsibilities, you may also:

  • Deliver Wildfire Containment Training to Battle Groups and other personnel as part of the BATUK Reception, Staging, and Onward Integration (RSOI) process.
  • Serve as an interpreter when required, supporting cross-cultural and multilingual communication.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Requirements

To be considered for the Range Warden role, applicants must:

  • Hold at least a KCSE Grade D or above.
  • Be fluent in English and Swahili, both spoken and written.
  • Be IT literate, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Word.
  • Be physically fit and able to pass a medical examination in line with job requirements.
  • Demonstrate a clear, confident communication style, particularly when using radios or mobile phones.
  • Possess a clean and valid Class B Kenyan driving licence.

Desirable Qualities

While not mandatory, the following will be considered an advantage:

  • Knowledge of wildlife, flora, and fauna in the region.
  • Previous service with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) or in related conservation/security roles.

Training Requirements

Selected candidates will undergo specific training to prepare them for the role. This may include:

  • Estate Safety Course (delivered in the UK)
  • RPAS Operators Course
  • UXO Awareness Training
  • Team Medic Training
  • Vehicle Familiarisation and Conversion Training
  • Black Communications Systems & Voice Procedure Training
  • Fire Awareness Training
  • Health & Safety Training
  • Basic First Aid Training
  • Basic Map Reading
  • Wildlife Behaviour and Awareness Training

Working Conditions

The Range Warden position requires a flexible approach to work. Successful applicants must be prepared to:

  • Work overtime when necessary.
  • Work in shifts, including unsociable hours.
  • Drive vehicles as part of their daily responsibilities.
  • Work in remote or secondary duty stations away from the primary location.
  • Engage in activities involving interaction with children and vulnerable adults (subject to security clearance from the Kenya Police).

This role is physically and mentally demanding, requiring resilience, adaptability, and strong situational awareness.


Competence Evaluation

As part of the recruitment process, candidates will be assessed against three competences as well as technical job-related knowledge.

The three core competences are:

  2. Communicating and Influencing
  3. Managing Customers & Suppliers

Candidate responses will be rated on a seven-point scale ranging from “Not Demonstrated” (1) to “Outstanding Demonstration” (7). Strong evidence of behaviours and technical skills will be required to achieve higher scores.
