The Department of Environment and Natural Resource Management is central to ANU’s vision of preparing graduates who can contribute to sustainable solutions for today’s environmental and ecological challenges. The department focuses on areas such as biostatistics, data science, renewable energy, botany, remote sensing and GIS, geological sciences, climatology, climate change, general ecology, and landscape ecology. Through teaching, research, and community engagement, the department plays a crucial role in equipping students to address global concerns such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable energy use.
The position is available at different faculty ranks depending on the candidate’s experience and qualifications: Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, and Lecturer. Each role has unique expectations, but all are united by the common goal of contributing to academic excellence and advancing knowledge in the environmental sciences.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Faculty members in this department will be responsible for a broad range of academic, research, and administrative duties. The following responsibilities apply to all ranks, with increasing depth and leadership expectations at the higher levels:
- Curriculum Development and Implementation
- Contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of a high-quality curriculum that is aligned with international standards and emerging industry needs.
- Participate in curriculum review processes to ensure relevance, responsiveness, and integration of cutting-edge knowledge.
- Design and develop detailed course and lesson plans, including field-based learning components that enhance practical skills.
- Teaching and Learning
- Prepare engaging learning materials for both face-to-face and online teaching, ensuring adaptability for diverse student needs.
- Employ innovative pedagogical approaches such as case studies, field studies, laboratory sessions, group projects, and simulations to promote active learning.
- Assess student performance through a variety of methods, including examinations, assignments, practical exercises, and projects.
- Ensure that learning experiences are student-centered and foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
- Research and Scholarship
- Undertake independent and collaborative research in specialized fields such as renewable energy, climate change, ecology, and biostatistics.
- Publish research findings in high-impact refereed journals, books, or electronic platforms, thereby contributing to global knowledge.
- Pursue research grants and funding opportunities, and manage funded projects in line with institutional and donor requirements.
- Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research projects, guiding students through proposal development, data collection, analysis, and publication.
- Student Support and Mentorship
- Serve as academic advisors to students, guiding them in career planning, academic development, and personal growth.
- Provide mentorship to postgraduate students, particularly in research areas, ensuring quality and timely completion of theses and dissertations.
- Support students in linking academic knowledge with professional opportunities, including internships and industrial attachments.
- Professional Engagement and Outreach
- Participate actively in departmental, school, and university committees, contributing to decision-making processes and policy development.
- Engage with industry, government agencies, NGOs, and communities to establish partnerships that enhance learning and research opportunities.
- Represent the university at conferences, seminars, and workshops both locally and internationally, showcasing the institution’s expertise.
- Facilitate linkages that expose students and staff to professional networks and emerging opportunities.
- Administration and Service to the University
- Take part in departmental administration and program coordination.
- Contribute to quality assurance processes, ensuring compliance with university and regulatory standards.
- Participate in community service activities, reinforcing the university’s commitment to service and societal impact.
Academic Ranks and Expectations
The responsibilities above cut across all levels. However, the scope and level of leadership required vary depending on academic rank:
1. Professor
- Lead in curriculum design and review, setting academic standards for the department.
- Provide mentorship to junior faculty members and promote a culture of excellence in teaching and research.
- Supervise at least five postgraduate students to completion, including two doctoral candidates.
- Demonstrate national, regional, and international recognition for research contributions.
- Secure significant research grants and establish collaborations with global partners.
2. Associate Professor
- Provide academic leadership by coordinating specific programs and research projects.
- Supervise at least four postgraduate students, including at least one doctoral candidate.
- Maintain a robust publication record in refereed scholarly journals.
- Engage actively in grant writing and resource mobilization for departmental projects.
- Promote the visibility of the department at national and international platforms.
3. Senior Lecturer
- Play a key role in curriculum delivery, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning experiences.
- Supervise at least three postgraduate students to completion.
- Contribute to the department’s research output by publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
- Secure external research funding to support departmental initiatives.
- Participate in departmental leadership and mentoring of junior staff.
4. Lecturer
- Deliver engaging lectures and practical sessions in assigned courses.
- Supervise undergraduate and selected postgraduate projects.
- Maintain an active research agenda with publications in refereed journals.
- Contribute to departmental projects, outreach programs, and administrative duties.
- Demonstrate competence in online teaching and modern pedagogical methods.
