Meru University Of Science & Technology (MUST) Hiring Research Assistant / Graduate Assistant – Cement & Concrete

by Recal

Meru University of Science & Technology (MUST), in collaboration with the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM) in Germany, is pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for a Research Assistant / Graduate Assistant in Cement & Concrete at the Institute of Cement & Concrete. This position is offered under the prestigious project titled “Circular bio-based intelligent organic and oxide engineering ecosystems – From multiple heterogeneous sources to homogeneous high-tech materials supply streams (Circular B-I/O)”, funded by the VolkswagenStiftung foundation.

This opportunity is designed for motivated individuals who wish to make a meaningful impact in the future of sustainable construction materials. The project focuses on developing innovative, sustainable approaches to cement and concrete production by leveraging bio-based by-products and optimizing mineral oxides as cement substitutes. It provides a unique chance to contribute to high-level international research while being based in Meru, Kenya.

Through this role, the successful candidate will be at the forefront of laboratory and field-based investigations that seek to revolutionize cement and concrete technology for Kenya, Africa, and the global construction industry. If you are passionate about materials science, sustainability, and advanced research, this is an opportunity you should not miss.

Project Summary

The construction industry continues to rely heavily on petrochemical products and industrial residues for cement clinker reduction in concrete production. While effective, these sources raise sustainability concerns. The Circular B-I/O project envisions an alternative: replacing these traditional materials with bio-based agricultural and aquacultural by-products that are often unused or discarded.

However, bio-based residues pose challenges. Unlike industrial residues, they are distributed across multiple small deposits and are subject to seasonal availability. This project tackles these challenges by aiming to consolidate many small heterogeneous material streams into a few homogeneous supply streams suitable for large-scale construction applications.

The project’s scope extends beyond material science and includes socio-economic aspects, AI-driven decision-making, and international policy development. Ultimately, the goal is to provide scalable, reliable, and sustainable alternatives to traditional cement inputs and to establish sound policy advice for global application.

Specific Objectives of the Project:

  1. Framework Development – Create and evaluate frameworks for waste collection, livelihoods associated with it, and potentials for circularity.
  2. Scaling Conversion Processes – Scale up the three-step conversion process for large-scale application and validate the concept.
  3. Supply Stream Assessment – Determine whether diverse, small-scale material streams can effectively be transformed into homogenous supplies for construction.
  4. Training & Capacity Building – Organize training workshops that both disseminate knowledge and provide valuable data for final research conclusions.
  5. Policy Advice – Deliver reliable, tangible, and scalable data to support policy formulation and recommendations globally.

This project represents a unique fusion of technological innovation, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic development—making it one of the most forward-thinking initiatives in modern construction materials research.
