The University of Eastern Africa, Baraton, is inviting applications for a full-time position within its Open Distance and e-Learning (ODeL) Department. To support this mission, the University seeks to recruit an experienced professional for the position of Instructional Designer. This role is essential to the continuous development of online and blended learning programs at the University. The successful candidate will report directly to the Director for the Open Distance and e-Learning Department and will play a central role in designing, structuring, and uploading instructional content to the Learning Management System (LMS).

Job Summary

The Instructional Designer will work in collaboration with subject matter experts to develop engaging, effective, and well-structured instructional content for online courses. The role requires someone with strong expertise in instructional design, proven knowledge of modern educational technologies, and the ability to apply instructional theories to create meaningful learning experiences. The designer will also be expected to upload finalized content to the institution’s Learning Management System and ensure that all materials are aligned with the University’s educational standards and the learners’ needs.

This position is well-suited to a professional with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in instructional design and technology. The role requires creativity, attention to detail, and a capacity to translate academic content into engaging learning modules for diverse learners.


Overall Responsibility

The primary responsibility of the Instructional Designer is to create compelling learning activities and course content. The individual will collaborate with subject matter experts to determine instructional needs, apply tested instructional design methods, and make use of multimedia tools to improve learning effectiveness.

The Instructional Designer is expected to contribute to all aspects of the learning design cycle, from needs assessment and planning to development, implementation, and evaluation.


Required Qualifications and Experience

  • A Master’s degree in Education with specialization in instructional design, educational technology, or an equivalent field.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education, Educational Technology, Instructional Design, Communication, or a closely related field.
  • Over two years of proven working experience in instructional design and use of instructional technologies.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of learning theories and instructional design models.
  • Proficiency in lesson and curriculum planning.
  • Demonstrated experience with course development software and at least one Learning Management System.
  • Experience with at least one content authoring tool.
  • Visual design skills, including the ability to storyboard effectively.
  • Strong writing skills, particularly in drafting instructional text, audio scripts, and video scripts.
  • Ability to independently manage multiple projects, timelines, and stakeholders.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Instructional Designer will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, with duties including but not limited to the following:

  1. Conducting needs analysis to identify learning gaps and establishing measurable learning objectives for specific programs and courses.
  2. Selecting and applying instructional strategies such as scenario-based learning, inquiry-based approaches, and microlearning techniques to achieve desired outcomes.
  3. Creating engaging learning activities and designing compelling course content aimed at enhancing learner retention and knowledge transfer.
  4. Recommending and implementing innovative learning technologies, including gamification, simulations, and other digital learning tools.
  5. Collaborating with subject matter experts to identify learner needs and tailoring instructional strategies to meet these requirements.
  6. Defining instructional end goals and ensuring that course materials are designed to align with them.
  7. Visualizing instructional graphics, developing user interface designs, and ensuring the final learning product is interactive and engaging.
  8. Conducting instructional research and analyzing learner contexts to inform the design process.
  9. Applying proven instructional design theories, practices, and methodologies to guide the development process.
  10. Providing exercises, activities, and practical learning components that reinforce knowledge and skills.
  11. Working with media assistants to create supporting material and media, including audio, video, simulations, role-plays, and games.
  12. Designing assessments and criteria to evaluate learner performance effectively.
  13. Developing and implementing evaluation tools and assessment instruments to measure learning outcomes.
  14. Maintaining project documentation and course folders, ensuring all design processes and outputs are well-documented for future reference.
  15. Ensuring that all content uploaded to the Learning Management System meets quality assurance standards.
  16. Staying updated with developments in the field of instructional design and integrating best practices into the University’s e-learning strategy.
