The Kenya Country Office is currently seeking to recruit a qualified and experienced professional for the position of Driver under the Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains Enterprises in Central Kenya (SAVES) programme, implemented in partnership with AGRA. The SAVES project aims to enhance the livelihoods of smallholder farmers through sustainable agricultural practices, improved market access, and value chain strengthening in maize and pulses. The programme is currently active in Laikipia, Kirinyaga, and Meru counties, focusing on creating opportunities for entrepreneurship, youth engagement, and capacity building in sustainable farming systems.

This role offers an opportunity for an individual who is passionate about contributing to meaningful rural development through responsible logistical and operational support. The successful candidate will play a critical role in supporting the smooth implementation of project activities through efficient transportation, vehicle maintenance, and adherence to organisational and safety protocols.


Job Description

The Driver will be responsible for providing safe, efficient, and reliable transportation services to Farm Africa’s staff, visitors, and goods. The position holder will ensure that project vehicles are properly maintained, records are accurately kept, and all transportation activities adhere to Farm Africa’s operational and safety standards.

The role requires diligence, strong interpersonal skills, and a high degree of integrity. The successful candidate will also be expected to represent Farm Africa in a professional manner when interacting with partners, community members, and government agencies.

Key Responsibilities

1. Driving and Transportation

  • Provide safe, punctual, and efficient transportation services for Farm Africa staff, consultants, and visitors to and from designated locations within the project areas and beyond as assigned.
  • Transport project materials, equipment, and documentation as required, ensuring that all items are securely loaded and delivered in good condition.
  • Plan routes effectively and ensure timely arrival to destinations while adhering to traffic regulations and Farm Africa’s safety policies.
  • Maintain a professional and courteous attitude when driving or interacting with passengers, partners, or the general public.

2. Vehicle Maintenance and Care

  • Conduct daily pre-departure checks to ensure vehicles are in sound mechanical condition, including checks on fuel, oil, water, brakes, tyres, and lights.
  • Report immediately any mechanical faults, defects, or accidents to the line manager and ensure prompt repairs in coordination with the logistics team.
  • Maintain vehicles in a clean and tidy condition both inside and out, ensuring that the organisation’s branding and image are upheld.
  • Ensure that vehicle servicing, inspection, and insurance renewals are conducted on time, keeping all relevant documentation updated and accessible.

3. Record Keeping and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vehicle logs, including mileage records, fuel consumption, repairs, and service schedules.
  • Submit monthly vehicle usage reports to the line manager or relevant administrative officer, highlighting key issues or areas requiring attention.
  • Ensure that all movement authorisation forms and trip logs are properly signed by authorised personnel before undertaking any assignment.

4. Compliance and Safety

  • Strictly adhere to Kenyan traffic laws and regulations, as well as Farm Africa’s internal safety and driving policies.
  • Ensure that all passengers use seatbelts and that the vehicle is never overloaded.
  • Carry valid documentation at all times, including driver’s licence, insurance papers, and vehicle logbooks.
  • Report any traffic violations, incidents, or accidents immediately and follow the appropriate reporting procedures.

5. Administrative and Support Duties

  • Assist with the collection and delivery of mail, documents, and other administrative items as assigned by the line manager.
  • Support logistical arrangements during field events, trainings, and community meetings by transporting equipment or materials to designated sites.
  • Offer assistance in other administrative tasks within the office when not driving, as directed by the supervisor.

6. Representation and Conduct

  • Uphold Farm Africa’s values of integrity, professionalism, and respect when dealing with staff, partners, and community members.
  • Demonstrate discretion and maintain confidentiality regarding organisational and project-related information.
  • Promote a positive organisational image through responsible and ethical behaviour while on duty or representing Farm Africa in any capacity.

Key Working Relationships

The Driver will report directly to the Project Officer or Administrative Officer and will work closely with programme staff across the project areas. The position also requires coordination with logistics, procurement, and finance teams to ensure proper vehicle management and compliance with organisational policies.

Externally, the Driver will occasionally interact with community representatives, service providers, and government officials while performing assigned duties.


Performance Expectations

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate:

  • Consistent punctuality and reliability in the performance of all duties.
  • Strict adherence to driving safety regulations and organisational procedures.
  • Proactive communication regarding vehicle maintenance needs or operational challenges.
  • Professionalism in all interactions and representation of Farm Africa.
  • High standards of integrity, accountability, and respect for diversity.

Performance will be assessed through regular supervision and based on key indicators such as vehicle utilisation efficiency, maintenance records, adherence to safety standards, and feedback from project staff.


Working Conditions

The role will be based in Embu/Kirinyaga, with frequent travel to field locations in Kirinyaga, Laikipia, and Meru counties. The position requires flexibility and readiness to travel to remote areas under varying road and weather conditions.

The Driver will often be required to work beyond regular office hours, including weekends or public holidays, depending on the nature of project activities and field demands.

The Sustainable Agricultural Value Chains Enterprises in Central Kenya (SAVES) programme, implemented in partnership with AGRA, is a strategic initiative designed to improve smallholder livelihoods through sustainable and profitable farming systems. It seeks to strengthen agricultural value chains for maize and pulses by promoting improved productivity, efficient aggregation, and better access to markets.

Through capacity building, business development support, and the promotion of environmentally sustainable practices, the programme aims to create viable enterprises that can sustain themselves beyond donor support. A strong emphasis is placed on empowering women and youth to participate in agricultural entrepreneurship and value chain development.

The Driver’s role is an integral part of this initiative, ensuring efficient mobility for staff and resources, which in turn facilitates the delivery of project services to communities.
