As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity and enhance service efficiency across departments, the County seeks to recruit competent individuals to serve as Support Staff.

Support Staff play an essential role in ensuring the smooth running of daily operations within County offices, departments, and institutions. Their work supports administrative efficiency, hygiene, and general functionality in workspaces such as offices, kitchens, hospitals, learning institutions, and other government facilities.

Detailed Job Description

The Support Staff will perform a range of operational and manual tasks under the guidance and supervision of a senior officer. Their work will contribute to the overall effectiveness of County Government departments and ensure that service delivery processes run efficiently.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Support Staff shall include, but are not limited to, the following:

  1. Performing basic repair, maintenance, and operational duties within their area of specialization—such as cooking, tailoring, laundry services, or machine operation.
  2. Assisting in maintaining cleanliness and hygiene in work areas, equipment, and facilities to ensure a safe and sanitary environment.
  3. Supporting preparation and service of meals in County catering units, hospitals, or other designated facilities.
  4. Undertaking laundry duties, including washing, ironing, and proper handling of uniforms, linens, and other fabrics in assigned units.
  5. Assisting with minor repairs of tools and equipment, ensuring functionality and proper storage after use.
  6. Supporting tailoring and clothing repair activities within County institutions that require uniform production or fabric maintenance.
  7. Operating simple machinery and assisting in maintaining operational efficiency in workshops, production units, or service areas.
  8. Following all occupational safety and health guidelines in their respective work environments.
  9. Carrying out any other related duties as may be assigned by the immediate supervisor or departmental head.

Support Staff will be expected to maintain professionalism, confidentiality, and discipline while performing their duties. They should demonstrate commitment to teamwork and be ready to work in various locations within the County depending on operational requirements.


Areas of Specialization

Depending on departmental allocation and needs, Support Staff may serve in any of the following divisions:

  1. Catering and Food & Beverage Services:
    Responsible for assisting in meal preparation, food serving, and kitchen sanitation. Duties include cleaning utensils, preparing ingredients, setting up dining areas, and maintaining hygiene in compliance with health standards.
  2. Laundry Services:
    Engaged in washing, drying, ironing, folding, and storage of linens, uniforms, and other garments. Support Staff in this area ensure proper use of detergents, machinery, and adherence to cleaning schedules.
  3. Tailoring and Clothing Production:
    Assist in mending uniforms, sewing garments, and managing basic tailoring operations within County facilities such as hospitals or vocational training centers.
  4. Machine Operation:
    Handle and maintain simple operational machinery in workshops, offices, or industrial areas, including cleaning and minor servicing to support continuous workflow.
  5. Hospitality and Cleaning Services:
    Maintain cleanliness in offices, kitchens, and rest areas; assist with guest service in County hostels or guesthouses; and support event preparation and facility arrangement as directed.

Each Support Staff member will work under close supervision and will receive guidance and mentorship from senior officers or supervisors to ensure adherence to established operational standards.


Requirements for Appointment

To qualify for appointment to the position of Support Staff, an applicant must meet the following minimum criteria:

  1. Citizenship: Must be a Kenyan citizen (attach a copy of a valid National Identification Card).
  2. Education: Possess at least a Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
  3. Academic Performance: Attained at least Division IV in KCE or a minimum grade of D (Plain) in KCSE.
  4. Certificate of Good Conduct: Must possess a valid Certificate of Good Conduct from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).
  5. Trade or Technical Qualification: Hold a Government Trade Test Certificate Grade III in a relevant trade area or a Certificate from a recognized institution in any of the following fields:
    • Clothing and Textile
    • Hospitality
    • Machine Operation
    • Catering
    • Food and Beverage

Candidates are encouraged to attach copies of all relevant academic and professional certificates, identification documents, and testimonials.


Work Environment and Supervision

Support Staff will work under the close supervision of a senior officer. Their work may involve:

  • Rotational assignments in various County departments such as Health Services, Education, Administration, or Hospitality.
  • Working indoors or outdoors depending on assigned roles.
  • Physical activities such as cleaning, lifting, machine operation, or food service.

The County Government will provide necessary orientation and training to ensure that all Support Staff understand the operational standards, safety procedures, and ethical expectations of public service.
