Job Overview
The Medical Officer will play a central role in providing direct patient care, conducting medical evaluations, managing critical conditions, and ensuring adherence to clinical protocols within the hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating, diagnosing, treating, providing consultations, and admitting patients requiring critical care management. In collaboration with other medical professionals, the Medical Officer will ensure that AAR Hospital maintains the highest standards of care in all critical care operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
The primary responsibilities of the Medical Officer will include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Ethically reviewing and instituting appropriate therapeutic interventions for patients admitted to critical care units or requiring critical care support across the hospital.
• Reviewing patients in other units where CCU/HDU assistance is needed and making timely, evidence-based decisions regarding necessary medical interventions.
• Assisting in coaching and mentoring nursing staff and other clinical personnel on various aspects of critical care management and the handling of critically ill patients.
• Performing all medical procedures expected of a Critical Care Unit (CCU) Medical Officer, including invasive and non-invasive monitoring, airway management, and emergency interventions.
• Ensuring that the highest standards of diagnostic accuracy, patient care, and ethical medical practice are consistently maintained.
• Preparing detailed and accurate medical reports, patient summaries, and other clinical documentation as required by hospital policy or regulatory authorities.
• Maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and timeliness in the handling of patients and departmental operations.
• Actively participating in continuous medical education (CME) programs, the development and implementation of clinical protocols, and departmental quality improvement initiatives.
• Contributing to medical research, clinical audits, and departmental review programs designed to enhance healthcare delivery standards and patient safety.
• Ensuring consistency in the application of clinical protocols and guidelines across all units to maintain uniformity and quality in patient care.
• Maintaining effective and compassionate communication with patients and their families, providing updates on treatment progress, care plans, and prognosis in a clear and empathetic manner.
• Advocating for patient welfare and excellence in clinical outcomes through diligent follow-up, collaboration, and proactive case management.
• Performing any other duties that may be assigned by the supervisor or the Head of Department in line with hospital objectives and operational needs.
Qualifications
Education:
• Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB or equivalent).
• Valid certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
• Certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) will be an added advantage.
• Certification in European Paediatric Advanced Life Support (EPALS) will also be an added advantage.
Experience:
• At least one year of post-internship experience in a recognized hospital setting.
• Experience in private practice will be considered an advantage.
Registration:
• Must be registered with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board (KMPDB).
• Must hold a valid annual practice license.
