Main Job Purpose

The Avionics Engineer is responsible for carrying out scheduled and unscheduled aircraft maintenance to ensure the continued airworthiness of AMREF Flying Doctors’ aircraft fleet. This includes ensuring compliance with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) regulations, AMREF Flying Doctors’ maintenance procedures, and other applicable regulatory standards. The role demands a proactive approach to identifying and resolving avionics and system-related issues, maintaining high operational readiness, and ensuring that each aircraft is in optimal condition for safe flight operations.


Detailed Job Description

  1. Aircraft Maintenance (Scheduled and Unscheduled)
    The Avionics Engineer will carry out both line and base maintenance as per the approved maintenance program. This includes performing scheduled checks, preventive maintenance, and necessary repairs to ensure that all aircraft systems are in perfect operational condition. The engineer will also be required to respond to unscheduled maintenance needs, including those occurring away from the base of operations, ensuring that any technical issue is resolved promptly and effectively.
  2. Troubleshooting and Repairs
    The role involves identifying, diagnosing, and resolving technical issues across electrical, avionics, and instrument systems. The Avionics Engineer will conduct inspections, functional tests, repairs, replacements, and modifications on aircraft systems, components, and equipment to maintain their airworthiness and performance integrity.
  3. Component Assembly and Disassembly
    The engineer will undertake assembly, disassembly, and necessary repairs during avionics repair or modification processes. This includes removal, replacement, or repair of engines, airframes, and other systems integral to avionics functionality.
  4. Defect Rectification and Certification
    The Avionics Engineer will ensure that all identified defects are rectified within approved timelines and that aircraft or components are certified accordingly before being released for service. Thorough documentation and verification of rectified issues will be mandatory before any flight operation.
  5. Cabin System Reviews and Rectification
    The engineer will review reported cabin defects, perform necessary rectifications, and ensure that all aircraft cabin systems are fully functional before the aircraft is cleared for missions.
  6. Reporting and Documentation
    Accurate reporting and documentation are essential aspects of this role. The engineer will be expected to record any abnormal wear, damage, or system irregularities and ensure that such issues are communicated promptly to the relevant supervisors.
  7. Supervision and Coordination
    The Avionics Engineer will supervise tasks carried out by technicians and ground operations personnel. This includes overseeing aircraft internal and external cleaning, refueling, and defueling processes, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and maintenance standards.
  8. Maintenance of Equipment and Premises
    The engineer will ensure that all maintenance tools, equipment, and facilities are maintained in accordance with industry standards. Regular inspections and calibration of equipment are essential to ensure operational accuracy and reliability.
  9. Technical Liaison and Collaboration
    The role involves active collaboration with flight crew, maintenance teams, and other departments to ensure effective communication regarding aircraft conditions, defects, and maintenance progress. The engineer will debrief flight crews to accurately define and document technical issues.
  10. Technical Analysis and Data Management
    The engineer will analyze and interpret technical information, maintenance data, and airworthiness directives. Additionally, they will ensure that all planned maintenance work is monitored to completion and accurately recorded in maintenance management systems.
  11. Inventory and Logistics Management
    The Avionics Engineer will liaise with the Stores Officer to manage technical tools, spare parts, and equipment. This includes identifying required replacement parts, verifying their airworthiness upon receipt, and preparing replaced parts for shipping or core exchange.
  12. Work Pack Management
    The engineer will review work packs and plan for necessary tools and materials required to complete maintenance checks efficiently. Proper planning and requisitioning will help ensure uninterrupted workflow and aircraft readiness.
  13. Audits and Compliance
    The Avionics Engineer will assist in audits of both internal maintenance operations and contracted Approved Maintenance Organizations (AMOs). Responsibilities include verifying work package completeness, supporting audit programs, and ensuring compliance with regulatory and internal quality standards.
  14. Reliability Data and Reporting
    The engineer will collect, review, and analyze reliability data to ensure accuracy and correct classification under respective ATA chapters. They will also prepare and submit periodic reports, including fleet and component utilization, delay and availability reports, and warranty tracking summaries.
  15. Deferred Maintenance Control
    Daily management of deferred maintenance items will be part of this role. The engineer will prepare open defects and MEL (Minimum Equipment List) reports, ensuring timely updates and communication with relevant departments for operational planning.
  16. Engine and APU Monitoring
    Responsibilities include carrying out engine condition trend monitoring and maintaining accurate records of engine and auxiliary power unit (APU) performance data. This ensures early detection of performance deviations and supports predictive maintenance planning.
  17. Warranty and Contracted Support Oversight
    The engineer will monitor components under warranty and ensure that timely claims are filed. They will notify supervisors of expiring warranties and assist in managing maintenance relationships with contracted AMOs and service providers.
  18. Engineering Support and Cross-functional Collaboration
    The Avionics Engineer will work closely with the engineering unit and provide technical input on various projects and operational improvements. The role also involves supporting fleet management and technical decision-making processes.
  19. Additional Responsibilities
    The engineer will attend to other tasks and duties as assigned, including participation in internal quality improvement initiatives, safety audits, and operational reviews aimed at maintaining AMREF Flying Doctors’ high safety and maintenance standards.

Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies

The Avionics Engineer must demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of Kenya Civil Aviation Regulations (KCARs), as well as detailed familiarity with avionics systems used in Citation business jets and Pilatus PC-12 aircraft. A strong focus on aircraft safety, precision in technical work, and the ability to interpret manufacturer’s publications and maintenance data are critical.

The position also requires strong analytical and decision-making abilities, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the capacity to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. Flexibility to handle multiple tasks and adapt to varied working hours is essential, given the operational demands of AMREF Flying Doctors. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel, is also required.


Work Environment

AMREF Flying Doctors operates on a 24-hour schedule due to the nature of its aero-medical operations. The Avionics Engineer must therefore be prepared to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, when operational requirements demand.
