Job Purpose

The Business Development Manager will be responsible for generating revenue for CIC General Insurance Limited through effective market development, channel management, and the acquisition of profitable business. The role involves developing and maintaining strong relationships with agents, brokers, and other intermediaries, while ensuring that the company achieves its financial and strategic objectives.


Primary Responsibilities

1. Portfolio Optimization

The Business Development Manager will ensure that the company maintains a well-balanced and profitable portfolio mix. The target is to achieve an optimal distribution of 70% Motor, 20% Medical, and 10% Non-Motor business. This balance is designed to mitigate risk exposure and enhance the company’s long-term profitability. The role requires continuous monitoring of market trends and the implementation of strategies to strengthen underrepresented product segments.

2. Revitalization of Underperforming Agents

The position involves identifying agents who are not meeting performance expectations and implementing targeted engagement and support strategies to improve productivity. This includes personalized coaching, performance tracking, and the introduction of incentive mechanisms to reignite motivation and drive higher levels of output. Strengthening these relationships will not only improve agent performance but also ensure the sustainability of the business partnerships.

3. Training and Capacity Development

The Business Development Manager will design and execute structured training programs aimed at improving product knowledge among intermediaries and the internal sales force. These sessions will cover market awareness, customer engagement, and compliance with company standards. Additionally, consumer education programs will be implemented to promote awareness of CIC’s insurance products, helping customers make informed decisions.

4. Profitable Business Acquisition and Retention

A key responsibility of this position is to ensure the acquisition and retention of profitable business. This involves developing effective marketing and sales strategies, identifying high-potential clients, and managing renewals efficiently. The Business Development Manager will be expected to collaborate with underwriting and product teams to ensure that pricing and policy terms remain competitive and aligned with market dynamics.

5. Customer Experience Excellence

Ensuring consistent delivery of excellent customer service is central to this role. The Business Development Manager will champion initiatives to enhance the customer experience, from initial inquiry to policy servicing and claims handling. This includes developing service standards, monitoring client feedback, and implementing continuous improvement measures to maintain a high level of customer satisfaction.

6. Sales Force Capacity Building

To enhance overall sales performance, the Business Development Manager will focus on building capacity within the sales force and intermediaries. Through targeted development programs, mentorship, and regular performance reviews, the role aims to foster a motivated and results-oriented team. This process will also involve identifying high-performing individuals for leadership grooming and succession planning.

7. Premium Collection Efficiency

Timely and efficient premium collection is crucial for maintaining financial stability. The Business Development Manager will ensure that all intermediaries and clients adhere to established payment timelines. This includes close collaboration with finance teams to monitor collection status, identify potential defaults, and implement corrective actions where necessary.

8. Client Query and Complaint Resolution

An essential aspect of this role is liaising with internal departments to ensure that client inquiries, service requests, and complaints are handled promptly and effectively. The Business Development Manager will coordinate with underwriting, claims, and customer service departments to ensure that service standards are met and that customer trust and confidence are maintained.

9. Market Intelligence Reporting

The position requires the collection and analysis of relevant market data to inform business strategy. This includes monitoring competitor activities, pricing trends, customer preferences, and emerging market opportunities. The insights derived from this analysis will guide decision-making in product development, marketing, and customer engagement.

10. Quotation and Service Turnaround

The Business Development Manager will ensure that all quotations and service requests from clients, brokers, and independent agents are processed promptly. Efficient turnaround times are essential for maintaining client satisfaction and competitiveness in the market. The role will also involve streamlining internal workflows to minimize delays and enhance responsiveness.

11. Support and Empowerment of Business Development Executives

The incumbent will provide direct oversight and support to Business Development Executives, ensuring that they are well-equipped to meet their performance objectives. This includes regular coaching, performance evaluations, and capacity-building initiatives. The goal is to foster a culture of accountability, continuous learning, and high performance within the team.


Generic Duties

Performance Management

The Business Development Manager will oversee the performance appraisal process for staff within the department. This involves providing constructive feedback, setting measurable objectives, and supporting professional development through mentoring and coaching initiatives.

Resource Allocation and Planning

The role includes responsibility for staff deployment, resource allocation, and approval of leave schedules to ensure uninterrupted operations. The Business Development Manager will also participate in the planning and budgeting process, contributing insights and recommendations that support the company’s strategic direction.

Departmental Participation

The incumbent will actively participate in departmental meetings and contribute to discussions on policy formulation, operational efficiency, and market growth strategies. Collaboration with other departments will be critical to achieving organizational goals.

Staff Management

The Business Development Manager will foster a high-performing culture within the sales department. This includes monitoring internal performance across market segments, ensuring adherence to targets, and promoting teamwork and accountability. The manager will also play a key role in talent acquisition, retention, and the continuous improvement of departmental processes.

Performance and Target Achievement

The manager is expected to ensure that at least 90% of departmental staff meet or exceed their targets. This will involve implementing structured monitoring systems, providing regular feedback, and ensuring that performance improvement plans are effectively executed.


Audit, Compliance, and Risk Management

Compliance with internal and external regulatory frameworks is fundamental to the integrity of CIC General Insurance Limited. The Business Development Manager will ensure full adherence to company policies, operating procedures, and industry standards.

This includes strict compliance with all relevant legislation, insurance regulations, and ethical practices. The incumbent must ensure that the department consistently achieves a “good” rating during both internal and external audits by maintaining proper documentation, transparent processes, and adherence to compliance guidelines.

In addition, the Business Development Manager will be responsible for identifying and addressing potential risk factors within their area of operation. Where necessary, risks will be escalated through the appropriate channels to ensure timely mitigation and resolution.


Special Position Requirements

This position may require travel to distant branches or areas where CIC General Insurance Limited has business interests. The Business Development Manager should therefore be flexible and willing to travel as needed to oversee regional operations and engage with intermediaries and clients across multiple locations.

Furthermore, the role may occasionally require extended working hours to ensure that key deliverables are met and that critical projects are completed within the required timelines.


Experience Required

The successful candidate is expected to have over four years of relevant experience in business development, sales, or a related field, ideally within the insurance or financial services industry.
