HR/656/25 – Postdoctoral Fellow (Red Palm Weevil Project)

The Postdoctoral Fellow (Red Palm Weevil Project) will play a key role in conducting advanced scientific research focused on the management and control of the red palm weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus), a major invasive pest that threatens the livelihoods of millions of farmers globally. The position will contribute to icipe’s ongoing efforts under its Invasive Species Management programme, which aims to protect agricultural productivity and biodiversity through innovative pest management solutions.

Job Description
The Postdoctoral Fellow will be responsible for planning, executing, and reporting on scientific research within the scope of the Red Palm Weevil Project. This will include the development of biological control strategies, field trials, and laboratory-based studies to better understand the ecology and management of the pest. The Fellow will also collaborate with national, regional, and international partners to ensure that research outputs contribute to policy formulation and practical solutions for farmers and agricultural stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory and field research to understand the biology, ecology, and behaviour of the red palm weevil.
  • Develop, test, and evaluate environmentally sustainable pest management technologies, including biological control options.
  • Design and implement field trials to assess the effectiveness of control methods under various agroecological conditions.
  • Collect, analyse, and interpret data to support research findings and prepare technical and scientific reports.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including entomologists, ecologists, and socio-economists, to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to the dissemination of project outcomes through conferences, workshops, and stakeholder meetings.
  • Supervise and mentor graduate students and research assistants working on related projects.

Job Description
Working under the supervision of senior scientists, the Research Officer II will be responsible for implementing laboratory and field experiments, collecting and analysing data, maintaining research equipment, and preparing progress reports. The officer will also play a central role in ensuring that research outputs are well-documented and disseminated to internal and external stakeholders.

The Senior Executive Officer will provide high-level administrative, logistical, and operational support to the Director General and the senior management team at icipe. This position plays a strategic role in ensuring the efficient functioning of the Executive Office by coordinating meetings, preparing reports, managing communications, and facilitating the execution of institutional priorities.

Job Description
The Senior Executive Officer will serve as a central liaison between the Director General’s office, internal departments, external partners, and key stakeholders. The role requires exceptional organisational skills, discretion, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, multicultural environment. The incumbent will oversee the coordination of executive operations, ensure the timely flow of information, and support strategic planning and implementation processes across the institution.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide executive administrative support to the Director General, including managing correspondence, scheduling meetings, and preparing documentation.
  • Coordinate and monitor the implementation of key institutional decisions, policies, and projects to ensure timely follow-up and reporting.
  • Draft, edit, and review communications, reports, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Serve as the focal point for coordination with donors, government agencies, and international partners on matters requiring the attention of the Director General.
  • Organise and manage high-level meetings, conferences, and workshops, including logistical arrangements and preparation of briefing materials.
  • Maintain accurate records and databases of institutional correspondence, agreements, and reports.
  • Oversee the preparation of agenda items, minutes, and action plans for executive meetings and ensure their effective dissemination and tracking.
  • Supervise support staff within the Executive Office and promote efficient and effective teamwork.
  • Participate in budget preparation, resource planning, and financial tracking for the Executive Office.
  • Contribute to the enhancement of internal communication and coordination processes across icipe’s departments.
  • Handle confidential information with integrity and professionalism, ensuring compliance with institutional policies and standards.
