TRANSPORT SECTION

1. Bus Driver Grade III/IV

The Bus Driver Grade III/IV will be responsible for operating University buses and ensuring the safe and timely transportation of staff, students, and goods. This role requires a highly responsible individual with excellent driving skills, strong situational awareness, and a solid understanding of road safety regulations.

Job Description and Key Responsibilities:

  • Safely operate University buses and other assigned vehicles in compliance with traffic laws and institutional regulations.
  • Transport students, staff, and visitors to various destinations as assigned by the Transport Officer or relevant authority.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date trip records, mileage logs, and fuel usage reports as required.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure the roadworthiness of the vehicle, including checking oil, water, tire pressure, lights, and other essential components.
  • Report any mechanical issues, malfunctions, or accidents promptly to the Transport Officer for appropriate action.
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the assigned vehicle at all times, both interior and exterior.
  • Adhere to University transport policies and ensure passengers comply with safety regulations during transit.
  • Assist in the coordination of vehicle scheduling, route planning, and logistics to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Respond to emergency transport needs within the University promptly and professionally.
  • Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with passengers, staff, and members of the public.
  • Participate in regular defensive driving and safety training sessions organized by the University.
  • Ensure the safe transportation of University property and handle it with care during loading and offloading.
  • Support the general maintenance of vehicles by scheduling timely servicing, oil changes, and safety checks.
  • Uphold confidentiality, integrity, and accountability in the discharge of all assigned duties.

The Bus Driver is expected to display a high level of discipline, punctuality, and commitment to duty. The position demands a driver who can adapt to varying schedules and routes while maintaining safety as a top priority.


2. Shovel/Tractor Operator Grade III/IV

The Shovel/Tractor Operator Grade III/IV will be responsible for operating heavy equipment such as tractors and shovels used in various University operations, including landscaping, construction support, and general maintenance works. The role requires technical proficiency, attention to detail, and a commitment to ensuring safe and efficient machinery use.

Job Description and Key Responsibilities:

  • Operate shovel, tractor, or other heavy machinery safely and efficiently in accordance with University policies and standard operational procedures.
  • Carry out assigned mechanical or operational tasks related to grounds maintenance, construction, and other facility management functions.
  • Perform daily pre-operation inspections to ensure the equipment is in good working condition before use.
  • Report mechanical problems or equipment failures immediately to the supervisor or maintenance department.
  • Perform minor preventive maintenance on machinery, including checking fluid levels, cleaning, and lubricating moving parts.
  • Handle material loading, earthmoving, and waste relocation as required by various University departments.
  • Maintain operational logs, including hours of operation, maintenance performed, and fuel consumption.
  • Assist in minor repair works and coordinate with technicians to ensure timely and proper maintenance.
  • Ensure safe operation practices and compliance with environmental, health, and safety guidelines.
  • Participate in routine safety drills and technical refresher training organized by the University.
  • Support other logistical operations when not operating machinery, including vehicle movement, groundswork, or facility preparations.
  • Observe and enforce strict safety measures while working around staff, students, and other University property.
  • Maintain proper records of assigned machinery, work completed, and any incidents that occur during operations.
  • Operate machinery in an environmentally responsible manner and assist in the proper disposal of waste materials.
  • Contribute to teamwork by collaborating with other operators, drivers, and technical staff to ensure smooth operations in the Transport and Facilities Departments.

This role requires an operator who is attentive, mechanically inclined, and capable of handling technical machinery responsibly. The successful applicant must demonstrate good judgment and an unwavering focus on operational safety.


Academic Qualifications and Work Experience

Applicants for the above positions must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • KCSE Grade D Plain and above.
  • Valid Driving License classes B, C1, C, D1, D2, and D3.
  • Valid Institutional PSV badge.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of relevant driving or machinery operation experience in a recognized institution, preferably one with experience in bus driving or similar operations.
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping and communication.
  • Defensive driving course certification.
  • First Aid course certification.
  • Must be conversant with driving in Nairobi and its environs.
  • Suitability test certification from the Ministry of Transport.
  • Safety course certification.
  • Basic mechanics course is an added advantage.
  • Valid special license for shovel or tractor operation (for the Shovel/Tractor Operator position).
