Introduction

Hand in Hand Eastern Africa (HiH EA) is a registered non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in Kenya and Tanzania, and is part of the broader Hand in Hand global network. Since its establishment in Kenya in October 2010, the organization has grown to operate across 26 field offices in 33 out of 47 counties. Through its comprehensive economic and social empowerment programs, HiH EA has mobilized and trained over 354,858 members, of whom 80% are women and 40% are youth.

These members have collectively created over 334,179 enterprises—including 30% eco-enterprises—and generated more than 452,272 jobs. The organization employs a participatory self-help model, supporting marginalized communities in building sustainable livelihoods. As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen agricultural productivity and knowledge transfer, HiH EA operates demonstration farms that serve as practical learning and innovation centers. These farms showcase sustainable farming techniques, promote improved agronomic and livestock practices, and provide training platforms for smallholder farmers. The Farm Foreman position is integral to achieving these objectives by ensuring smooth farm operations, optimizing yields, and maintaining the integrity and productivity of both crop and livestock enterprises.

Job Description

The Farm Foreman will oversee and manage the daily operations of a medium-sized demonstration farm. This includes supervision of all livestock and crop production activities, ensuring optimal productivity, maintaining high standards of animal care, and implementing sustainable farming practices. The successful candidate will be responsible for coordinating farm labor, managing farm resources, and ensuring that all activities align with organizational and industry quality standards.

The position requires strong hands-on experience, leadership, and the ability to balance practical farm work with administrative responsibilities such as record-keeping, budgeting, and reporting. The Farm Foreman will also play an important role in mentoring farm staff and ensuring the farm’s profitability through effective production and marketing of agricultural products.


Duties and Responsibilities

The Farm Foreman will undertake a wide range of operational and supervisory duties as outlined below:

Livestock Management

• Perform and oversee the daily milking of dairy cows, whether manually or using milking machines, ensuring hygiene and milk quality are maintained.
• Feed and water all livestock, including cattle, goats, and poultry, following proper feeding schedules and nutrition plans.
• Monitor animal health, identify early signs of illness, and report or coordinate necessary veterinary care to prevent disease outbreaks.
• Maintain high hygiene standards in all animal housing facilities, ensuring sheds, feeding areas, and equipment are cleaned regularly.
• Oversee breeding programs, calf rearing, and maintain accurate records on births, vaccinations, and treatments.
• Monitor feed quality, storage, and inventory to prevent waste, contamination, or spoilage.
• Ensure proper inspection and harvesting of honey from apiary units.
• Identify and pursue local market opportunities for the sale of livestock and livestock products, including milk, eggs, honey, and fish.
• Implement environmentally sustainable practices for manure disposal and general farm waste management.
• Prepare and manage budgets related to livestock production, including feed, veterinary expenses, and equipment maintenance.

Crop Production Management

• Supervise all crop production activities, including land preparation, planting, weeding, spraying, and harvesting.
• Maintain irrigation systems, ensuring proper operation and scheduling for consistent crop hydration.
• Monitor crop health regularly and ensure timely application of fertilizers, manure, and pesticides in accordance with best practices.
• Develop and maintain a seasonal crop calendar, providing advice on optimal planting and harvesting schedules.
• Manage budgets for crop inputs, including seeds, fertilizers, labor, and machinery usage.
• Ensure proper post-harvest handling, including drying, storage, and transportation of produce to minimize losses.
• Identify and negotiate with potential buyers or markets for the sale of farm produce, ensuring profitability and sustainability.
• Work closely with the project officer to explore innovative approaches to increase yields, improve production efficiency, and expand market access.

Supervision and Staff Management

• Supervise daily work schedules of farmhands, assigning specific duties and ensuring adherence to performance standards.
• Train, mentor, and motivate junior workers, promoting teamwork and capacity building in both crop and livestock management practices.
• Enforce farm safety regulations and monitor work quality to maintain a safe and productive working environment.
• Oversee the operation and maintenance of farm machinery, tools, and equipment, including tractors, pumps, and sprayers.
• Ensure regular servicing and repair of equipment to prevent downtime and enhance operational efficiency.
• Maintain accurate logs and reports covering livestock performance, crop yields, input usage, and labor hours.
• Ensure that all sales transactions are accurately recorded in the farm’s system and that weekly performance reports are prepared and submitted to the program office.

Farm Administration and Reporting

• Participate in planning and budgeting processes for farm activities, aligning expenditure with production goals.
• Track production costs, monitor resource utilization, and recommend efficiency improvements to enhance profitability.
• Coordinate the preparation of annual reports highlighting farm performance, achievements, challenges, and future action plans.
• Liaise with relevant stakeholders, including suppliers, buyers, and technical advisors, to ensure effective farm operations.
• Support organizational monitoring and evaluation exercises by providing accurate data and reports on farm output and productivity.


Job Specifications

• Minimum Qualification: Diploma in Agriculture, Crop Production, Animal Husbandry, or Farm Management.
• At least 3–5 years of hands-on experience in mixed farming operations.
• Proficiency in milking and livestock handling techniques.
• Basic knowledge of animal nutrition and veterinary care.
• Familiarity with irrigation systems, pest management, and crop care practices.
• Mechanical aptitude for handling and maintaining farm machinery and tools.
• Basic business development and farm marketing skills.
• Strong leadership, teamwork, and communication abilities.
• High integrity and ethical conduct.
• Excellent record-keeping, time management, and organizational skills.


Work Environment

The Farm Foreman will operate within an active farm environment, balancing administrative and fieldwork duties. The role involves physical activity and outdoor exposure in varying weather conditions. The incumbent must be adaptable, resourceful, and capable of multitasking to meet production goals while maintaining quality and safety standards.

The role also entails collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, including local communities, suppliers, buyers, and project officers. A strong sense of responsibility, professionalism, and efficiency is essential to ensure the demonstration farms operate as models of sustainable and profitable agriculture.
