JOB TITLE: OPD / A&E NURSE IN-CHARGE

Reports to: Chief Nursing Officer


JOB PURPOSE

The Nurse In-Charge – OPD & A&E will be responsible for the overall coordination, supervision, and delivery of high-quality nursing care within the Outpatient and Accident & Emergency Departments. This role ensures that patients receive prompt, safe, and effective medical attention while maintaining the highest professional standards in clinical practice. The position also entails overseeing staff performance, managing departmental operations, and ensuring alignment with hospital policies, regulations, and values.

The Nurse In-Charge will play a pivotal role in fostering teamwork, optimizing workflows, and maintaining compliance with clinical and regulatory standards. The position requires a proactive leader who can manage resources efficiently, promote continuous improvement, and uphold patient satisfaction as a central outcome of all care processes.


MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Leadership and Operational Management

  • Provide effective day-to-day leadership, supervision, and mentorship to nursing and support staff across the OPD and A&E departments.
  • Ensure adequate staffing levels through efficient duty rostering and fair work allocation among the nursing team.
  • Foster teamwork, professionalism, and discipline to ensure a cohesive and productive work environment.
  • Coordinate departmental activities to ensure smooth patient flow from triage to discharge while reducing waiting times and optimizing service delivery.
  • Monitor staff attendance, punctuality, and adherence to hospital policies to maintain a culture of accountability.

2. Clinical and Service Excellence

  • Supervise the delivery of patient care to ensure it meets the hospital’s quality standards and clinical protocols.
  • Oversee the triage and emergency response systems to ensure patients receive timely and appropriate interventions.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines and maintain a clean, safe, and organized clinical environment.
  • Oversee the operations of the Minor Theatre, ensuring preparedness, optimal utilization of resources, and adherence to clinical schedules.
  • Collaborate closely with consultants, doctors, and multidisciplinary teams to enhance continuity of care and ensure comprehensive service delivery.
  • Promote adherence to patient safety standards, documentation protocols, and nursing best practices.

3. Departmental Growth and Revenue Optimization

  • Support initiatives aimed at increasing patient volumes, retention rates, and utilization of outpatient and emergency services.
  • Monitor departmental efficiency, reduce operational wastage, and enhance resource utilization to improve overall cost-effectiveness.
  • Work collaboratively with Finance, Business Development, and Clinical teams to identify opportunities for process improvement and revenue growth.
  • Champion value-added services within the OPD and A&E, such as wellness programs, follow-up clinics, and minor surgical procedures.
  • Participate in the development of departmental budgets and ensure cost control measures are effectively implemented.

4. Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with consultants, clinicians, and allied health professionals to strengthen patient care pathways.
  • Facilitate effective communication between nursing, administrative, and clinical teams to ensure operational harmony.
  • Participate in regular interdisciplinary meetings to review patient outcomes, identify service gaps, and align departmental objectives with hospital-wide strategies.
  • Act as a liaison between patients, families, and the hospital to ensure clarity, empathy, and effective communication in all interactions.

5. Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with hospital policies, Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) standards, and statutory healthcare regulations.
  • Participate in hospital quality improvement programs, internal audits, and accreditation exercises.
  • Monitor and evaluate quality indicators, patient outcomes, and service improvement initiatives within the OPD and A&E departments.
  • Develop and implement corrective actions in response to identified gaps in clinical or operational processes.
  • Maintain up-to-date records on departmental compliance, performance metrics, and quality assurance reports.

6. Staff Development and Performance Management

  • Conduct regular performance reviews to assess staff productivity, identify training needs, and enhance competency development.
  • Facilitate continuous professional development (CPD) sessions and promote mentorship programs to support clinical excellence.
  • Encourage innovation, accountability, and ongoing learning among team members.
  • Support succession planning and leadership development to strengthen the department’s human resource capacity.
  • Ensure that nursing staff maintain current licenses and certifications as required by professional and regulatory bodies.

7. Patient Experience and Customer Service

  • Champion a culture of compassionate, respectful, and patient-centered care throughout the departments.
  • Address patient complaints and feedback promptly, ensuring effective service recovery and continuous improvement.
  • Oversee patient education and communication to enhance understanding of treatment plans and hospital services.
  • Ensure that all staff members uphold high standards of customer service and maintain the hospital’s reputation for excellence.
  • Work closely with the Quality and Customer Relations teams to evaluate and improve patient satisfaction scores.

8. Reporting and Administration

  • Prepare and submit accurate, timely reports on departmental performance, staffing, and incident management.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of patient statistics, staff schedules, and resource utilization.
  • Provide detailed monthly reports to the Chief Nursing Officer, covering key operational, clinical, and financial indicators.
  • Ensure compliance with documentation protocols, data protection regulations, and hospital administrative requirements.
  • Support the development and implementation of departmental policies, guidelines, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from a recognized institution.
  • Valid Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) practicing license.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of nursing experience, with at least two (2) years in a supervisory or in-charge role, preferably within an OPD/A&E setting.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is mandatory.
  • Certification in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) will be an added advantage.

KEY JOB REQUIREMENTS
