This role requires technical leadership, precision in execution, and a deep understanding of electrical and mechanical systems supporting high-availability environments.

The position offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional who can lead preventive maintenance programs, manage capacity planning, and drive operational excellence within one of the most critical technology environments in the organization.

Role Overview

The Datacenter Power and Mechanical Systems Manager oversees the operation, maintenance, and reliability of all critical power and mechanical infrastructure within the data center. This includes ensuring that all electrical and mechanical systems perform optimally, maintaining uninterrupted operations in a mission-critical environment. The role requires a blend of strategic foresight, technical expertise, and operational diligence to guarantee that the data center meets its uptime and efficiency goals.

Key Responsibilities

Power Infrastructure Management

The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of the data center’s electrical infrastructure, ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable operation. Responsibilities include:

  • Managing the operation and maintenance of all electrical systems including utility feeds, switchgear, generators, automatic transfer switches (ATS/STS), uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, and power distribution networks such as main distribution boards (MDBs), sub-distribution boards (SDBs), and power distribution units (PDUs and rPDUs).
  • Monitoring power systems to ensure capacity optimization, load balancing, and redundancy in line with Tier III or Tier IV design principles.
  • Coordinating planned maintenance and testing activities such as generator load tests and UPS battery autonomy tests, minimizing operational risk and ensuring resilience.
  • Managing fault responses and escalation processes during power-related incidents, ensuring timely restoration of services and conducting comprehensive root cause analyses.

This aspect of the role demands a proactive approach to power systems management, ensuring uninterrupted energy delivery to the facility while maintaining compliance with established engineering and operational standards.

Mechanical and Cooling Systems Management

Another key component of this position involves the management of mechanical and cooling systems. The Datacenter Power and Mechanical Systems Manager will:

  • Oversee HVAC systems and related infrastructure, including CRAC/CRAH units, condensers, in-row coolers, chillers, and containment systems.
  • Optimize cooling performance by managing airflow, temperature, and humidity control to maintain environmental stability and energy efficiency.
  • Supervise routine and emergency maintenance of mechanical systems, ensuring adherence to OEM standards, preventive maintenance schedules, and operational best practices.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance system performance, energy efficiency, and overall sustainability of the mechanical plant.

The role requires a hands-on understanding of how power and mechanical systems interact to create a stable and efficient environment for IT operations.

Preventive Maintenance and Reliability

A cornerstone of this role is ensuring reliability through robust preventive maintenance programs. The successful candidate will:

  • Own the preventive and corrective maintenance calendar for all power and mechanical systems across the facility.
  • Supervise and manage vendor activities to ensure compliance with safety, quality, and operational procedures.
  • Conduct redundancy and failover testing across systems to validate resilience and recovery capability under different operating conditions.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, test reports, and performance logs to support audits and future planning.

This responsibility ensures that all critical systems remain operational, minimizing downtime and extending the life cycle of vital infrastructure assets.

Capacity Planning and Infrastructure Projects

As part of long-term operational planning, the Datacenter Power and Mechanical Systems Manager plays a pivotal role in forecasting and project execution. Responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing and forecasting power and cooling capacity utilization to identify available headroom and plan necessary upgrades.
  • Providing technical input and oversight for data center expansion projects, technology refresh initiatives, and sustainability programs such as containment retrofits, solar integration, or UPS upgrades.
  • Collaborating closely with internal teams and external contractors to plan and implement projects while minimizing the impact on ongoing operations.
  • Ensuring that infrastructure projects are executed within scope, schedule, and budget while maintaining compliance with operational standards.

This function requires strategic thinking and technical insight to support the data center’s scalability and modernization efforts.

Compliance, Documentation, and Reporting

Ensuring compliance and maintaining comprehensive documentation are critical functions of this position. The Datacenter Power and Mechanical Systems Manager will:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documents, including single-line diagrams, mechanical schematics, asset inventories, and operational manuals.
  • Ensure that all operational procedures and systems meet internal policies, regulatory requirements, and global standards such as Uptime Institute and ISO certifications.
  • Produce detailed reports on system performance, incidents, energy efficiency (PUE), maintenance KPIs, and capacity utilization.
  • Support audits and inspections by providing accurate and verifiable technical documentation.

This responsibility ensures transparency, accountability, and readiness for both internal and external compliance reviews.

Essential Knowledge and Technical Expertise

The role requires in-depth knowledge and hands-on expertise in the following areas:

  • Low-voltage power distribution systems, UPS operations, generators, switchgear, and power quality management.
  • HVAC systems, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, and mechanical plant operations including airflow and temperature control.
  • Use of Building Management Systems (BMS) or Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) platforms for system monitoring and alarm management.
  • Familiarity with Tier III/IV data center design standards, energy efficiency principles, and relevant regulatory codes.

This knowledge base ensures that the manager can effectively oversee all aspects of the facility’s critical systems and ensure high performance in line with organizational expectations.

Key Competencies
