South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) has announced several employment opportunities within the Division of Corporate Services. The university is inviting qualified and competent professionals to apply for the following positions on a six-month renewable contract. These positions provide an opportunity for skilled individuals to contribute to the efficient running of the university’s administrative and technical departments.

The available positions include Assistant ICT Officer, Principal Clerical Officer, Artisan (Electrician), and Artisan (Plumber). Each role plays a critical part in supporting the University’s operations, ensuring that its infrastructure, technology, and administrative systems function effectively to meet institutional goals.


ASSISTANT ICT OFFICER – SEKU GRADE 9 (Formerly Grade 7)

Ref: SEKU/ADV/AD/1/10/2025 – 1 Position
Terms of Employment: 6-month renewable contract

The Assistant ICT Officer will be deployed in one of three areas based on institutional needs: Business Applications, Database Administration, or Infrastructure Support. This position requires an individual capable of providing specialized ICT support, ensuring that university systems are efficient, reliable, and aligned with evolving technological standards.

Job Specifications

1. Business Applications
The officer deployed in Business Applications will be responsible for the development, customization, and maintenance of software systems that support university operations. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting systems analysis to determine functional requirements and system needs.
  • Developing and documenting programming specifications in collaboration with system users.
  • Customizing and updating existing application systems to enhance functionality and performance.
  • Researching new technologies and innovations to recommend upgrades or system improvements.
  • Testing developed applications to ensure reliability and compatibility.
  • Building and maintaining effective working relationships with ICT team members, application users, business champions, service providers, and consultants.
  • Providing training and ongoing user support for various applications.

2. Database Administration
The officer deployed in Database Administration will handle database management and ensure operational continuity. Responsibilities will include:

  • Performing database server administration and daily maintenance tasks.
  • Maintaining database performance, integrity, and security.
  • Ensuring the availability of Oracle, SQL Server, and other operational databases.
  • Monitoring and tuning database systems, performing backup and recovery processes, and managing storage requirements.
  • Diagnosing and troubleshooting faults within operational databases and implementing corrective measures.
  • Documenting, testing, and implementing updates or enhancements to databases.
  • Designing and implementing replication solutions and testing new database applications for efficiency.
  • Recommending system enhancements to maximize efficiency.
  • Researching emerging database technologies for innovation and optimization.
  • Ensuring all database solutions comply with institutional standards and integrate seamlessly with existing infrastructure.
  • Providing second-level user support and responding to after-hours database issues when necessary.

3. Infrastructure and Support
For deployment in Infrastructure Support, the officer will focus on hardware and user support functions. Duties will include:

  • Training new and existing employees on ICT systems and software.
  • Creating instructional materials and reports for ICT training sessions.
  • Assessing user competence and recommending areas for improvement.
  • Performing system administrative tasks and ensuring smooth system operations.
  • Maintaining accurate ICT inventories, including hardware, software, and peripherals.
  • Assisting in budget preparation for ICT operations and monitoring expenditure.
  • Setting up computers and related systems for new staff or office relocations.
  • Configuring user and email accounts and troubleshooting related issues.
  • Conducting preventive maintenance and ensuring ICT equipment operates optimally.

Person Specification

Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Business IT, Computer Engineering, ICT Project Management, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university. They must also hold valid certifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) or their equivalents. In addition, candidates should demonstrate proficiency in programming, database querying, and analytical skills. Membership in the Computer Society of Kenya or a similar professional body is required, as well as compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya on Leadership and Integrity upon successful appointment.


PRINCIPAL CLERICAL OFFICER – SEKU GRADE 11 (Formerly Grade 5)

Terms of Employment: 6-month renewable contract

The Principal Clerical Officer will be responsible for ensuring that the administrative functions within the Division of Corporate Services are performed efficiently. This role involves supervising clerical activities, maintaining records, and ensuring compliance with administrative procedures.

Job Specifications

Key duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Verifying compiled statistical records for accuracy and completeness.
  • Processing human resource and accounting transactions.
  • Maintaining efficient filing systems to ensure secure and organized document management.
  • Ensuring the safe custody of invoices, receipts, vouchers, and other related records.
  • Processing appointments, promotions, disciplinary cases, and transfers within human resource management.
  • Preparing payment vouchers and other financial documentation.
  • Compiling and computing financial or statistical records from various data sources.
  • Drafting routine correspondence and assisting with advertisement requisitions.
  • Assisting administrative officers and administrative assistants in clerical work.
  • Mentoring and guiding junior clerical officers to enhance departmental efficiency.

Person Specification

Applicants should possess a Diploma in Human Resource Management, Supply Management, Records Management, Business Administration, or Kenya Accountants and Technicians Certificate (KATC), or Intermediate Level of Kenya Administration and Management Examination (KAME) from KASNEB, or an equivalent qualification from a recognized institution. Candidates must have a minimum KCSE mean grade of D Plus or equivalent, at least eight years of relevant work experience, and demonstrated integrity and accountability. Proficiency in computer applications and competence in clerical duties are essential. Candidates must also fulfill the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya (2010) upon appointment.


ARTISAN: ELECTRICIAN – SEKU GRADE 13 (Formerly Grade 3)

Terms of Employment: 6-month renewable contract

The Artisan (Electrician) will be responsible for the maintenance and repair of the university’s buildings, electrical systems, and related infrastructure. This position supports the day-to-day operations of the university by ensuring that electrical installations and facilities remain functional and safe.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing maintenance of buildings, electrical equipment, and plants.
  • Undertaking routine and specialized electrical maintenance work.
  • Estimating and submitting requests for maintenance materials.
  • Participating in the preparation of specifications for minor electrical works and assisting in valuation exercises.

Person Specification

Candidates must possess a KCSE certificate with a minimum grade of D Plain or its equivalent, a Craft Certificate (Grade III) or equivalent qualification in Electrical Work from a recognized institution, and practical knowledge of building and electrical maintenance. Computer literacy and compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya are required.


ARTISAN: PLUMBER – SEKU GRADE 13 (Formerly Grade 3)

Terms of Employment: 6-month renewable contract

The Artisan (Plumber) will provide essential maintenance services, ensuring the proper functioning of the university’s water and sanitation systems. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the physical infrastructure of the institution.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performing maintenance of buildings, plumbing systems, and related equipment.
  • Undertaking both routine and specialized plumbing maintenance tasks.
  • Estimating and submitting requests for plumbing maintenance materials.
  • Assisting in preparing specifications for minor works and carrying out valuation of completed tasks.

Person Specification

Applicants must hold a KCSE certificate with a minimum grade of D Plain or its equivalent, a Craft Certificate (Grade III) or equivalent qualification in Plumbing from a recognized institution, and possess practical knowledge in maintenance works. Computer literacy and compliance with Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya (2010) are mandatory requirements.
