A leading university in Kenya is seeking to recruit a qualified and experienced Nursing Officer to join its healthcare team. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing comprehensive, high-quality nursing services to students, staff, and the wider university community. The Nursing Officer will work closely with other healthcare professionals and departments to ensure the effective delivery of patient care, the implementation of public health initiatives, and the promotion of a healthy learning and working environment across the institution. Job Objective
The job holder will be responsible for providing quality nursing services at the university, ensuring that all healthcare activities are conducted efficiently, ethically, and in accordance with professional standards and regulatory guidelines. The Nursing Officer will contribute to the maintenance of health and wellness within the university community, providing preventive, curative, and emergency care as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a range of professional duties that encompass patient care, health education, clinical documentation, and coordination with multidisciplinary teams. The responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Monitoring Patients’ Vital Signs and Triage
    The Nursing Officer will regularly assess and monitor patients’ vital signs and perform triage to determine the urgency of care required. Accurate triaging ensures that patients receive timely attention according to the severity of their condition.
  2. Record-Keeping and Documentation
    Effective record-keeping is a core responsibility of this role. The officer will maintain clear and precise documentation of patient assessments, medical interventions, treatment outcomes, and follow-up actions in accordance with professional and institutional standards.
  3. Health Education
    The Nursing Officer will be responsible for educating patients and members of the university community on preventive health measures, disease management, and general wellness. Health education will be delivered through direct consultations and community outreach initiatives.
  4. Facility Hygiene and Safety Maintenance
    Ensuring a clean, safe, and hygienic clinical environment is vital. The officer will maintain high standards of cleanliness within the facility and ensure compliance with safety and infection prevention protocols.
  5. Collaboration with Multidisciplinary Teams
    The officer will work closely with doctors, laboratory personnel, pharmacists, counselors, and other medical professionals to deliver holistic and integrated healthcare services. Collaboration is key to ensuring continuity and quality of patient care.
  6. Professional and Ethical Practice
    All nursing procedures must be performed with professionalism and in adherence to the ethical standards outlined in the institution’s procedure manual and national nursing practice guidelines.
  7. Participation in Student Affairs
    As part of the university’s commitment to student welfare, the Nursing Officer may be called upon to participate in student-related programs and events, offering medical support and health guidance where necessary.
  8. Equipment Maintenance
    The officer will ensure that all medical and diagnostic equipment are in proper working order. Any malfunction should be reported promptly to the maintenance team, and necessary calibration should be arranged in a timely manner.
  9. Patient Advocacy
    Advocating for patients’ health and well-being is an essential aspect of nursing care. The officer will actively listen to patients’ concerns, provide psychological and emotional support, and take appropriate action or escalation where required.
  10. Regulatory Compliance
    The Nursing Officer will ensure adherence to all regulatory requirements related to nursing practice, including the standards established by the Nursing Council of Kenya and other relevant health authorities.
  11. Decision-Making in Patient Care
    The officer will participate in decisions regarding patient management, ensuring that all care decisions are guided by institutional policies, ethical considerations, and best clinical practices.
  12. Emergency Response
    The officer must be capable of responding swiftly and effectively to medical emergencies, particularly during triage. Emergency care must be provided according to established protocols and in collaboration with other medical staff.
  13. Compassionate Care and Support
    Creating a nurturing and empathetic care environment is essential. The officer will provide psychological support to patients, helping them cope with stress, anxiety, and health challenges.
  14. Assessment, Planning, and Evaluation of Nursing Interventions
    The role involves a continuous cycle of patient assessment, care planning, intervention, and evaluation to ensure optimal recovery and well-being of all patients under care.
  15. Emergency Care Delivery
    The Nursing Officer will deliver emergency care in accordance with professional guidelines and institutional procedures, ensuring patient stabilization and timely referral when necessary.
  16. Assistance in Medical and Surgical Procedures
    The officer will assist in both minor and major surgical procedures as required, ensuring adherence to sterile techniques and procedural protocols.
  17. Utilization of Laboratory and Diagnostic Results
    The officer will interpret and utilize laboratory and diagnostic findings to make sound clinical judgments that support evidence-based care and accurate patient management.
  18. Prescription and Medication Administration
    In line with set guidelines, the Nursing Officer will prescribe certain medications and administer prescribed drugs to patients safely and effectively.
  19. Research and Quality Improvement
    The officer will participate in clinical research activities and apply research findings to enhance patient care and improve service delivery within the facility.
  20. Other Assigned Duties
    The Nursing Officer may undertake any additional responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor to support the smooth operation of the university’s health services.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:

  • At least a Diploma in Nursing from an accredited or recognized institution.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in an accredited health facility or academic institution.
  • Registration and a valid practicing license from the Nursing Council of Kenya.
  • Knowledge of Hospital Management Systems (HMS) will be considered an added advantage.
