Overall Job purpose:
The University Counsellor plays a pivotal role in advancing the institution’s commitment to holistic student and staff well-being. The position is responsible for developing and delivering comprehensive counselling and wellness programs that foster mental health awareness, emotional resilience, and personal development. By providing professional counselling services, the role supports individuals in managing stress, navigating personal and academic challenges, and making sound decisions that enhance overall performance and supportive learning environment.
Qualification
Education, Skills and Experience
Must have at least:
- A Master’s Degree in Counselling, Psychology or related field from an accredited institution
- Post-graduate Diploma in Counselling from an accredited institution.
- At least five (5) years of relevant experience providing counselling services, preferably in a university or educational setting.
- Must be a registered counsellor, meeting the educational and ethical standards set by the Counsellors and Psychologists Board and be an active member of a relevant professional association
- Must fulfill any additional requirements as stipulated in the Counsellors and Psychologists Act (No. 14 of 2014)
Key responsibilities also include
Duties and responsibilities:
- Planning, coordination, and implementation of counselling programs and initiatives for the university community.
- Offering confidential, one-on-one counselling services to students and staff on personal, academic, and emotional concerns.
- Contribute to research, service evaluation and audit, either individually or as part of a team to identify behavioural and emotional patterns that may affect student’s mental health and ability to study.
- Conducting psychological assessments and providing appropriate referrals for specialized support when necessary.
- Organizing and facilitating awareness campaigns and workshops on issues such as mental health, alcohol and drug abuse prevention, and stress management.
