ABOUT BOMA

BOMA is an organization committed to creating long-term resilience pathways for communities living in the harshest climatic and socio-economic conditions. Its work is anchored in the Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) graduation model, which offers an integrated and context-adaptive approach aimed at addressing the structural causes of extreme poverty. Through a combination of skills training, seed capital, business mentorship, digital tools and market integration, REAP provides a sustainable foundation for economic growth. The model has been expanded to support women, youth and refugee populations whose livelihoods face significant vulnerability to climate shocks and limited economic opportunities.

Through strategic partnerships, strong monitoring and evaluation systems, and dedication to reaching last-mile communities, BOMA has positively impacted more than 1 million lives since its inception. The organization continues to leverage digital platforms, field-based insights and stakeholder collaboration to deliver scalable and lasting change across Africa’s drylands.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The Changing Lives Project is an initiative funded by the World Food Programme and implemented by BOMA to accelerate the transition of refugee households from aid dependence to self-reliance. Rooted in the REAP for Refugees model, the program targets 2,000 participants selected from Category 3 households within the Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee settlements. The approach integrates business skills development, household visioning, market linkages, conditional growth grants, financial literacy and mentorship.

Under Kenya’s Differentiated Assistance Framework, the program aligns with national policies such as the Refugee Act (2021), the SHIRIKA Plan (2024) and the Kenya DA Transition Framework (2025). The purpose is to support refugee households to strengthen their enterprise capacities and increase resilience while reducing reliance on food assistance and humanitarian support systems. Collaborations with structures like KISEDP and Technical Working Groups ensure coordinated implementation and alignment with broader livelihoods strategies.

As part of program delivery, Incentive Mentors will operate within assigned zones or villages, working directly with households to provide training, consistent mentorship and tailored support as they progress through the graduation pathway. The role demands strong community engagement, understanding of local dynamics and consistent field presence.
