Job Description

Mechanical Functional Area

Technicians deployed to the mechanical section contribute to various recurring and preventive mechanical maintenance activities. Their responsibilities include assisting in the preparation, execution, and documentation of maintenance tasks across different types of equipment, infrastructure, or marine crafts. The work requires close coordination with the Senior Technician and other members of the maintenance team. Key duties include:

  1. Assisting the Senior Technician in implementing mechanical maintenance programmes and ensuring proper documentation of all maintenance jobs undertaken. This includes routine maintenance schedules, component servicing, and recording of outcomes.
  2. Supporting the Senior Technician during emergency repairs involving infrastructure, marine crafts, or mechanical equipment. This may involve working in fast-paced environments, especially when operational continuity is at risk.
  3. Preparing regular reports on jobs executed, which are used to track maintenance progress, identify repeated faults, and enhance the planning of future maintenance activities.
  4. Assisting the Senior Technician in conducting routine checks on tools and maintaining an up-to-date inventory of required tools for various mechanical tasks. This function ensures timely availability of tools and enhances the efficiency of maintenance operations.

Electrical Functional Area

In the electrical section, the Technician provides essential support in the monitoring, maintenance, and repair of electrical installations, equipment, and power supply systems. This role requires a keen understanding of electrical safety and operational procedures. Duties include:

  1. Assisting the Senior Technician in inspecting electrical installations, marine crafts, and electrical equipment within assigned operational areas to ensure proper functioning.
  2. Assisting the Senior Technician in preventive maintenance of electrical equipment, including ensuring scheduled tasks are carried out and properly recorded. Preventive maintenance plays a critical role in reducing electrical failures.
  3. Supporting the Senior Technician in overseeing power supply and distribution matters affecting company premises, substations, and housing estates, ensuring reliability and operational safety.
  4. Assisting the Senior Technician during emergency repairs of electrical installations, marine crafts, or associated equipment. Electrical emergencies often require rapid response and close adherence to safety protocols.
  5. Supporting the Senior Technician in ensuring safe use of electrical equipment and maintaining availability of necessary electrical accessories to support continuous operations.

Civil Functional Area

The civil engineering section requires Technicians to assist in the inspection, construction, and maintenance of civil works. These may include structural, building, and permanent way works. Duties include:

  1. Assisting the Senior Technician in preparing material specifications for civil engineering, building, and permanent way works. This involves identifying required materials and ensuring specifications align with technical and quality standards.
  2. Supporting the Senior Technician in executing building, civil, and permanent way works as required. This includes site preparation, structural reinforcement, and monitoring of progress.
  3. Assisting in the inspection of civil materials, ensuring that all materials used meet required standards and are suitable for the intended engineering tasks.

Projects Functional Area

The projects section focuses on data collection, site monitoring, and reporting activities related to engineering project implementation. Technicians deployed here support the Senior Technician in several ways, including:

  1. Assisting the Senior Technician in gathering data necessary for design and engineering projects. This may include measurements, field observations, and data consolidation for design teams.
  2. Supporting the Senior Technician in preparing daily site records and weekly project status reports, which ensure accurate documentation of project progress, challenges, and next steps.
  3. Assisting in ensuring safe use of construction equipment at project sites and maintaining availability of essential accessories required to support ongoing project activities.

Instrumentation and Control Functional Area

In the Instrumentation and Control (I&C) division, the Technician plays a vital role in maintaining and repairing various systems and equipment that support operations. Duties include:

  1. Assisting the Senior Technician in repairing equipment both in the field and in the workshop. This may include instrumentation systems, sensors, control units, and other essential components.
  2. Supporting the Senior Technician in carrying out routine and planned maintenance activities. This ensures that instrumentation and control systems remain efficient and reliable.
  3. Assisting the Senior Technician in preparing maintenance reports on assigned duties. These reports help track system performance, identify recurring issues, and support planning of future maintenance schedules.

Shift Functional Area

Technicians assigned to shift duties support round-the-clock operational activities involving electrical, mechanical, or ferry systems. This role requires adaptability, precision, and strong coordination skills. Responsibilities include:

  1. Implementing the organisation’s Electrical, Mechanical, or Ferry Shift Cycle arrangement, ensuring smooth handover and continuity of operations.
  2. Ensuring that all electrical faults are accurately recorded in the SAP system. Proper record-keeping supports corrective and preventive maintenance activities.
  3. Preparing daily reports on breakdowns and fault occurrences in a timely manner, ensuring operational visibility for supervisors.
  4. Maintaining accurate monitoring of power supply stability to prevent system interruptions.
  5. Allocating duties and supervising shift staff as required. This may involve coordinating with team members to ensure efficient delivery of tasks.
  6. Liaising with Station Controllers to ensure safe running of the power system, particularly during operational transitions or when addressing faults.
  7. Communicating with the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) when necessary to coordinate power-related activities or report system issues.
  8. Planning, monitoring, and evaluating the performance of shift staff against established targets and objectives. The Technician also assists in implementing development action plans to strengthen team capacity.
  9. Manning vessels during operational hours and ensuring compliance with marine safety guidelines and protocols. This may include monitoring vessel power systems and ensuring equipment is functioning properly.

Person Specifications

Applicants for this role must meet the following requirements:

  1. KCSE or its equivalent.
  2. Diploma in Mechanical, Mechatronics, Civil, Permanent Ways, Building and Construction, Electrical, Electronics, or Marine Engineering or its recognised equivalent.
  3. Proficiency in computer applications.
  4. Fulfilment of the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution of Kenya.
