Short Term Qualitative Research Expert – (3 – 5 months)
The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is a regional non-profit research and policy Institute established in 2010 to help bridge the gaps between research, policy and practice in development efforts in Africa. Our primary purpose is to contribute to sustainable development through the use of evidence and advocacy to strengthen political commitment and resource allocation for development issues; informing the design and implementation of effective interventions; and strengthening governance and accountability structures for tracking development challenges in Africa. AFIDEP is seeking a highly experienced Short-Term Qualitative Research Expert. The assignment will contribute to generating relevant evidence on youth employment, education, skills development, and future livelihoods in Africa. The role provides an exciting opportunity for a professional with strong qualitative research skills to contribute to strengthening the use of evidence in policy and practice across African contexts. The position will be based in AFIDEP’s Kenya Office.
Position Type – Short Term (3 – 5 months)
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership in qualitative data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Hand on experience using qualitative analysis software (Nvivo, Dedoose etc)
- Contribute to the development of high-quality research reports, policy briefs, and other knowledge products.
- Support the translation of research findings into policy-relevant insights for decision-makers.
- Work closely with AFIDEP’s research and policy teams to ensure methodological rigour and relevance.
Qualifications and Experience
- A Master’s or PhD in a relevant social science discipline (e.g. sociology, anthropology, development studies, education, economics, or related fields).
- A minimum of 10 years of intensive, hands-on qualitative research experience, demonstrated through a strong track record of relevant scientific or peer-reviewed publications.
- Proven experience conducting qualitative research in one or more of the following areas: youth employment and job creation; education and skills development; youth livelihoods.
- Experience conducting policy research and/or engaging government and other key stakeholders, including organising policy dialogues, is desirable
- Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills.
- Availability to undertake the assignment on a short-term basis (3–5 months).
