Job Description
Amref Health Africa in Kenya is seeking a visionary Country Director to lead the organisation’s ongoing evolution from programme implementer to system designer—co-creating people-centred primary health care systems and addressing the social determinants of health in partnership with communities and government.
The Country Director will be accountable for executing Amref Health Africa in Kenya’s 2023–2030 Strategic Plan and Sustainability Framework, ensuring delivery of systemic impact, diversified revenue, and innovative financing. This is a senior leadership role responsible for championing digital transformation, embedding data science and AI, and positioning Amref as a thought leader in the Primary Health Care/Universal Health Coverage space.
The job holder will report to the Board Chair of Amref Health Africa in Kenya, with a dotted line to the Group Programme Director (Amref HQ).
Key Responsibilities
- Catalyse community-led PHC systems impact by strengthening PHC/UHC outcomes, integrating social determinants and ESG excellence, and enabling government adoption and scale.
- Champion digital transformation, data science, and AI to improve decision-making, programme performance, and health system efficiency through strong monitoring, evaluation, insight-focused analytics, and learning.
- Deliver financial sustainability and resilience through disciplined financial management, compliance, cost efficiency, strengthened reserves, diversified revenue, and innovative/blended financing for scale.
- Build a high-performing, values-led culture by leading and developing a diverse, accountable Senior Management Team, strengthening leadership pipelines, and improving staff engagement, wellbeing, and retention.
- Amplify influence, visibility, and partnerships as Amref Health Africa in Kenya’s principal spokesperson—deepening government, donor, and private-sector partnerships; converting impact storytelling into policy influence and shaping discourse in the PHC/UHC space.
Qualifications
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in a health/health-related field and a Master’s degree in public health, business administration, or a related field.
- At least 10 years’ experience, with at least 5 years at senior management level in a comparable organisation.
- Proven track record in designing and scaling health systems interventions (PHC/UHC).
- Demonstrated success in strategic partnerships, fundraising, and digital transformation.
- Experience managing multicultural teams and complex budgets.

Additional Information
Terms of Appointment
This appointment is on contractual terms for a period of three (3) years, renewable subject to performance and organisational policies governing staff tenure. Successful applicants will be offered an attractive remuneration package commensurate with the responsibilities of the role.
Duty station & travel: Nairobi-based, with significant travel within Kenya and internationally as required.
