The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a leading research-to-policy institution dedicated to generating evidence, strengthening research capacity, and advancing policy engagement to support better health and development outcomes across Africa. Through its work, the Center contributes to the growth of African research leadership while promoting evidence-informed decision-making across sub-Saharan Africa. Its focus remains on producing credible research, building institutional and individual capacity, and ensuring that research findings are translated into practical policy and program actions.
As part of its ongoing research work, APHRC is seeking to recruit Qualitative and Quantitative Field Interviewers to support data collection for the Teach for Kenya Evaluation Project. This project is designed to assess the implementation and effectiveness of Teach for Kenya’s leadership-centered fellowship model, with a focus on how it contributes to teacher effectiveness, learner outcomes, and community engagement in underserved communities. The evaluation will be conducted in Nairobi City, Machakos, and Kisumu Counties, with field activities scheduled to take place in April and May.
The project forms an important part of efforts to understand how leadership-driven education interventions can shape learning environments and strengthen community participation in education. By gathering reliable field data, the study aims to provide evidence that can guide future education programming and policy decisions. The selected field interviewers will therefore play an important role in ensuring that the project captures accurate, timely, and high-quality data from the target locations.
Only applicants residing in Nairobi City, Machakos, and Kisumu Counties are encouraged to apply for these roles.
The available opportunities are outlined below:
Qualitative Interviewers
APHRC is looking for Qualitative Interviewers to support the collection of in-depth, field-based information for the Teach for Kenya Evaluation Project. These interviewers will be responsible for engaging respondents in a respectful, ethical, and professional manner while gathering detailed perspectives and experiences relevant to the study. The role is particularly important in helping the research team understand the lived realities of teachers, learners, and communities involved in the project.
Qualitative Interviewers will be expected to support the research process by facilitating conversations and observations that provide rich and meaningful insights. Their contribution will help build a clearer understanding of how the fellowship model is being implemented on the ground and how it influences educational and community outcomes.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Consenting to study respondents before interviews and group discussions are conducted.
• Conducting interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observations in line with the research protocol.
• Taking detailed notes and fieldnotes during and after interviews, discussions, and observations.
• Writing debriefing reports for all interviews and field engagements carried out during the study.
• Ensuring data quality throughout the fieldwork process by following approved data collection procedures.
• Maintaining confidentiality of all information collected from respondents and study participants.
• Ensuring the safety, proper handling, and responsible use of all data collection tools and equipment assigned for fieldwork.
• Supporting the implementation of the study by carrying out any other related activity assigned by the project team.
The role of the Qualitative Interviewer requires careful attention to detail, strong adherence to research ethics, and the ability to accurately document participant views and field observations. Since qualitative research depends heavily on the quality of engagement and documentation, the selected individuals will be expected to approach every interaction with professionalism and sensitivity.
The interviewer will also be expected to work closely with the broader research team, providing timely reports and participating in follow-up activities necessary for quality assurance. This may include clarifying responses, organizing fieldnotes, and ensuring that all materials collected in the field are complete and properly handled.
Given the nature of the project, the work of Qualitative Interviewers will directly contribute to a deeper understanding of teacher leadership, educational delivery, and community engagement in underserved settings. Their role will therefore be central to the success of the evaluation.

Quantitative Interviewers
APHRC is also recruiting Quantitative Interviewers to support structured data collection for the Teach for Kenya Evaluation Project. These interviewers will be responsible for administering interviews using approved data collection tools and ensuring that all information gathered is properly recorded, documented, and submitted according to project requirements.
The Quantitative Interviewers will play a key role in producing reliable numerical and structured data needed for the evaluation. Their work will support the measurement of important project indicators related to teacher effectiveness, learner outcomes, and community engagement. Accuracy, consistency, and compliance with field procedures will be essential throughout the assignment.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Committing to attend all days of training and data collection as scheduled for the assignment.
• Obtaining informed consent from study participants before interviews are conducted.
• Documenting informed consent appropriately in line with study procedures.
• Conducting interviews with respondents using approved data collection tools and processes.
• Recording all interviews conducted with respondents using digital recorders where required.
• Participating in daily debrief meetings with the research team during the fieldwork period.
• Acting as a custodian of APHRC data collection equipment during fieldwork.
• Observing safeguarding procedures throughout all stages of data engagement.
• Performing other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor in support of the study.
The Quantitative Interviewer role is essential for ensuring that data collected in the field is complete, accurate, and consistent with project expectations. Interviewers will be required to follow the approved study tools carefully and engage respondents in a manner that supports high response quality. Since structured data collection depends on strict adherence to procedures, the selected individuals will be expected to pay close attention to detail and maintain high standards of field discipline.
Daily debrief meetings will also form an important part of the assignment. These sessions will allow interviewers to report on field experiences, raise challenges, receive clarification, and support data quality improvement while the exercise is ongoing. Participation in these meetings is therefore part of the expected field engagement and contributes to the smooth implementation of the study.
In addition, safeguarding procedures must be observed throughout the data collection process. Interviewers will be expected to handle all field interactions responsibly and ensure that engagement with participants is conducted in an ethical and respectful manner. The proper handling of devices and other project equipment will also remain part of the core responsibilities attached to the role.
Why These Roles Matter
Both the Qualitative and Quantitative Interviewer positions are central to the successful implementation of the Teach for Kenya Evaluation Project. The evaluation seeks to generate evidence on a fellowship model that is intended to improve educational outcomes and strengthen community engagement in underserved areas. Reliable fieldwork is therefore necessary to ensure that the study findings are credible and useful.
The two roles complement one another. While Qualitative Interviewers will help capture perspectives, experiences, and observations that provide depth and context, Quantitative Interviewers will gather structured information needed to support measurement and analysis. Together, they will contribute to a more complete understanding of the impact and implementation of the intervention.
Because the study will be conducted in Nairobi City, Machakos, and Kisumu Counties, APHRC is specifically inviting applications from individuals residing in these locations. This is intended to support efficient field operations and ensure that the project is carried out effectively within the selected study areas.
