Project Background

With support from the Danish International Development Assistance (DANIDA), the Northern Rangelands Trust (NRT) is implementing the Nature-based Solutions (NbS), Water & Energy Project (2025–2028).

The project aims to strengthen community resilience by promoting nature-based solutions, improving access to water, and expanding renewable energy use across NRT’s 47-member community conservancies.

Working in close collaboration with national and county governments, community conservancies, and partners such as the Danida Fellowship Centre (DFC), the project focuses on building climate-resilient livelihoods in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid landscapes.

About the Role

NRT is seeking a qualified and motivated Climate Smart Agriculture Officer to lead the design and implementation of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Conservation Agriculture (CA) interventions across community conservancies.

The role focuses on improving agricultural productivity, strengthening climate resilience, and promoting sustainable land management practices among smallholder farmers — including women and youth — within arid and semi-arid regions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead implementation of Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Conservation Agriculture (CA) activities
  • Support the adoption of sustainable farming practices, including soil and water conservation and climate-resilient crops
  • Develop and manage work plans, budgets, and activity schedules
  • Coordinate with partners and stakeholders to ensure effective programme delivery
  • Support monitoring, reporting, and data analysis for climate-related activities
  • Promote inclusive participation of women, youth, and vulnerable groups
  • Establish demonstration farms and farmer learning sites
  • Strengthen collaboration with county governments and other partners
  • Support proposal development and resource mobilization

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or a related field
  • 3–5 years’ experience in climate-smart agriculture, conservation agriculture, or sustainable land management
  • Experience working in arid and semi-arid landscapes (ASALs)
  • Experience working with community-based organizations, farmer groups, or conservancies
  • Proven experience in programme implementation and stakeholder coordination

Key Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of climate-smart and conservation agriculture practices
  • Understanding of soil health, water conservation, and dryland farming systems
  • Ability to work with diverse communities and stakeholders
  • Strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently and within teams
