Job Purpose

The Laboratory Technician Pharmacy will be responsible for supporting laboratory-based teaching, research, and practical activities. The role involves preparing laboratory equipment and materials, maintaining laboratory records, ensuring compliance with safety procedures, supporting students and academic staff, and managing laboratory equipment and resources.

The successful candidates will help ensure that laboratory operations run efficiently while maintaining high standards of safety, organization, and technical support.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Laboratory Technician Pharmacy will undertake a wide range of technical and administrative duties within the laboratory environment, including:

Laboratory Management and Coordination

  • Coordinating work within the laboratory to ensure efficient utilization of laboratory resources and equipment.
  • Liaising with academic staff to discuss laboratory timetables, equipment requirements, and work plans for practical sessions.
  • Supporting the smooth operation of laboratory activities and ensuring that practical sessions are adequately prepared.
  • Ensuring that laboratory facilities are organized and ready for teaching and research activities.

Equipment Preparation and Maintenance

  • Preparing laboratory equipment, apparatus, chemicals, and materials before practical lessons and laboratory sessions.
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and ensuring that all apparatus are functioning properly.
  • Carrying out repairs and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment and apparatus where necessary.
  • Ensuring that laboratory equipment is properly cleaned after use.
  • Coordinating the use of expensive laboratory equipment to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime.

Health and Safety Compliance

  • Ensuring that all laboratory health and safety procedures are understood and correctly followed by staff and students.
  • Monitoring compliance with laboratory safety standards and regulations.
  • Ensuring the safe storage of chemicals, drugs, laboratory materials, and related supplies.
  • Promoting a safe working environment for all laboratory users.

Research and Experimental Support

  • Running trial experiments before practical classes to ensure procedures and materials are ready for use.
  • Demonstrating laboratory techniques and experimental procedures during practical sessions.
  • Supporting academic staff during laboratory classes and research activities.
  • Providing technical advice and guidance to both staff and students.
  • Assisting students with laboratory-based research projects and experimental work.

Record Management and Documentation

  • Maintaining accurate laboratory records and documentation.
  • Recording information related to students’ practical sessions, experiments, tracking methods, and results.
  • Cataloguing recordings and ensuring they are available when requested.
  • Maintaining inventory and operational records to support laboratory activities.

Student and Academic Support

  • Working closely with academic staff to support teaching and practical learning activities.
  • Providing technical assistance during laboratory classes and sessions.
  • Supporting individual students undertaking research projects.
  • Assisting in the implementation of practical learning programs within the pharmacy department.

Academic Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • Diploma in Pharmacy from an accredited institution; or
  • Diploma in Laboratory Sciences from an accredited institution.
  • KCSE Certificate or its equivalent qualification.

Experience Requirements

Candidates should have:

  • Previous work experience in a university laboratory or scientific laboratory environment.
  • Strong practical and organizational skills with the ability to manage workload effectively.
  • Commitment to supporting academic research activities.
  • Strong knowledge of the relevant subject area together with a broad academic background that enables contribution to teaching programs.
  • Experience in pharmacognosy, pharmaceutical chemistry, or pharmaceutics will be an added advantage.
