Recruitment of Interns for Government Ministries, Departments, State Agencies/Corporations, and Public Universities

by OYK

The Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) is a flagship youth empowerment initiative by the Government of Kenya designed to bridge the gap between academic training and the demands of the workplace. The programme provides recent university graduates with an opportunity to gain practical experience within the public sector while developing the professional skills, knowledge, and competencies required for long-term career growth. By exposing graduates to real work environments, the internship aims to improve employability, strengthen professional networks, and encourage innovation and entrepreneurship among young professionals.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) has announced the recruitment of Cohort 9 interns under the Public Service Internship Programme (PSIP) for the 2026/2027 Financial Year. Successful applicants will be deployed to various Government Ministries, Departments, State Agencies, State Corporations, and Public Universities across the country for a structured internship programme lasting one year.

The internship provides graduates with an opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the day-to-day operations of public institutions while contributing to service delivery. Participants will work alongside experienced professionals, enabling them to develop practical skills that complement the knowledge acquired during their university studies. The programme also exposes interns to public sector values, governance systems, and workplace ethics, preparing them for future employment opportunities in both the public and private sectors.

To qualify for appointment under the Public Service Internship Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

• Hold a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline from a recognized university.
• Have graduated not earlier than the year 2021.
• Be proficient in computer skills.
• Have not previously benefited from a similar internship programme.

Internship Duties and Responsibilities

The internship is structured to ensure participants receive meaningful workplace exposure while developing competencies that improve their competitiveness in the job market.

Duration of Internship

The Public Service Internship Programme will run for a period of twelve (12) months. The internship is non-renewable and is intended to provide graduates with a one-time opportunity to gain practical public sector experience before transitioning into employment or other career opportunities.

Stipend

Interns engaged under the programme will receive a monthly stipend at a rate determined by the Government. The stipend is intended to facilitate participation in the internship throughout the twelve-month placement period.

The certificate serves as evidence of practical work experience gained within the Kenyan public service.
