Kituo Cha Sheria is a leading Human Rights and Legal Aid providing NGO since 1973. We are seeking to recruit dynamic, self-driven and result oriented persons to fill in the following two vacant positions.

  1. COORDINATOR – MOMBASA REGIONAL OFFICE (Ref: KCS/MRO-MSA/APP)

Responsible to the Executive Director for strategic planning, budgeting, co-ordinating, developing and implementing the legal aid programme aimed at providing legal services to qualified individuals and community groups. Also responsible for fundraising for programmes and developing improved systems and procedures as well as monitoring and evaluating programme activities and individual performance against set targets. Other duties include report writing, team building, providing effective leadership and implementing on-the-job training to improve employee performance. 
Minimum Qualifications and Training: Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree, with relevant training in human rights and access to justice. Adequate knowledge of land and labour issues or equivalent qualifications would be an added advantage. Must be an advocate of the High Court of Kenya with a current practising certificate Masters degree and adequate knowledge and experience of land and labour issues will be an added advantage.
Relevant Experience: Must have been an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya for a minimum of five (5) years. The successful candidate must demonstrate a track record of success in managing a legal and human rights function for a minimum of four (4) years; experience of working with a civil society organisation and knowledge of the NGO sectors is a further added advantage. 
Skills: Must be proactive with strong communication, interpersonal and influential skills. Also must be proficient in using word processing and spreadsheet computer packages and in possession of a valid driving licence.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Developing appropriate fundraising strategies and proposals as well as sustainable alternative revenue sources
  • Developing appropriate public relations strategies designed to promote KITUO’s image and relations with all stakeholders.
  • Reviewing the operations and results of the organisation and providing periodical reports to the Executive Director.
  • Reviewing the effectiveness of legal services such as the preliminary screening of clients, provision of legal advice, counselling clients and drafting pleadings, court representation as well as dealing with client complaints.
  • Develop and implement appropriate workflow systems and processes for clients accessing services at KITUO, appropriate feedback and monitoring and evaluation system to ensure effectiveness and institutional learning
  • Developing a strategic plan and budget as well as outlining key activities to be undertaken to expand the network of pro-bono advocates throughout Kenya.
  • Developing work schedules and allocating cases in order to ensure that volunteer advocates receive a continuous flow of court cases for their action.
  • Build and coordinate sustainable networks/partnerships with legal aid institutions, and actors in the administration of justice to enhance access to justice.
  • Identify legal problems of public interest nature, research on them and develop multi-prong solutions therein, including but not limited to public/strategic/impact litigation.
  • Develop strategies for addressing the systemic challenges facing the poor’s quest for justice
  • Work in multi-disciplinary teams to monitor, document and seek redress for land, labor and housing-related human rights abuses
  • Coordinate mobile legal aid clinics to enhance access to justice by people and communities facing legal problems, and who cannot reach KITUO
  • Develop and operationalize effective reporting mechanisms for the legal aid programme
  • Developing strategic management plans and budgets as well as setting targets, monitoring and evaluating organisational performance.
  • Developing and implementing effective legal services and community partnership operational manuals, including financial accounting, procurement and logistics as well as human resources management systems.
  • Preparing annual reports and filing returns in compliance with statutory requirements.
  1. COORDINATOR FINANCE AND ADMINISTRATION (Ref: KCS/FAD-NRB/APP)

The coordinator will be responsible to the Executive Director for strategic planning, budgeting, co-ordinating, Developing and implementing financial plans and budgets for KITUO, outlining projected revenue sources and expenditures. Also responsible for Developing and installing effective financial management systems and procedures aimed at improving financial reporting and accounting systems to ensure that all income is properly receipted and accounted for. Other duties include Developing and maintenance of effective office systems (e.g. office maintenance, fixed assets, supplier contacts), ensuring these are consistent with Kituo’s operating requirements. Support the efficient running of Kituo’s office daily operations. Ensure all procurement processes are in compliance with Kituo’s and donor regulations. Support logistics for Kituo’s programme activities and any other administration duties as agreed. Advise on HR policies when required to ensure these comply with statutory regulations. Maintain personnel records and coordinate recruitment/induction in line with Kituo’s processes.

 Minimum Qualifications and Training: Must be in possession a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Commerce or Economics or equivalent qualification. Must also be a registered member of ICPAK. A Master’s degree in the related field will be an added advantage.

Relevant Experience: Must have gained a minimum of 5 years’ progressive financial management and grants management experience on national development projects;

Skills: Must have good communication skills and must be proficient in using word processing, spreadsheet as well as QUICKBOOKS accounting software package. Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills, creative problem-solving, conflict, ethical management skills and excellent written and oral communication skills, Strong analytical and computer skills, especially with accounting software, spreadsheets and financial analysis.

Key duties and responsibilities include:

  • Developing and implementing financial plans and budgets for KITUO, outlining projected revenue sources and expenditures.
  • Developing and installing effective financial management systems and procedures aimed at improving financial reporting and accounting systems to ensure that all income is properly receipted and accounted for.
  • Establishing stringent expenditure control procedures by ensuring that proper authorization for payments is strictly followed, any expenditure incurred are supported by payment vouchers and other valid accounting documents as well as ensuring those budgetary allocations are not exceeded without justifiable cause.
  • Maintaining a fixed assets policy governing cost effective acquisitions, maintenance, valuation, depreciation, capitalization, replacement and disposal.
  • Designing and coordinating the implementation and maintenance of financial information systems to cover the general ledger, job costing, asset management as well as income management system.
  • Interpreting financial reports, statements, accounting records and advising the Executive Director on the significance of the same as well as identifying, evaluating and presenting alternative options for action.
  • Reviewing analysis of activities, costs, operations and forecast data as well as building financial scenarios to determine the progress of each programme against stated goals and objectives.
  • Developing and implementing a flexible and responsive procurement and stores policy that ensures goods and services are procured with due regard to economy and efficiency through the establishment of effective stock control systems.
  • Developing and implementing effective human resource and administrative systems and procedures aimed at enhancing organizational efficiency, raising staff morale and increasing productivity.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement integrated management plans and strategies that will ensure the achievement of KITUO’s goals and objectives.
  • Representing KITUO in meetings, conferences and workshops and other forums to discuss financial matters.
  • Preparing annual reports, donor reports, project proposals and position papers as well as filing returns to comply with statutory requirements.
  • Reviewing the operations and results of the programme and providing periodical reports to the Executive Director.
  • Developing and implementing strategic human resource and administration plans, outlining the activities to be undertaken and expected outcomes.
  • Reviewing organizational performance by monitoring, tracking and evaluating progress made against activity plans, target and budgets.
  • Developing and implementing effective strategies for employing qualified candidates with the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, behaviors and other characteristics necessary for effective job performance.
