The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is a regional non-profit research and policy institute dedicated to bridging the gap between research, policy, and practice in addressing Africa’s most pressing development challenges. Our mission is to institutionalize a culture of consistent evidence use in public policy formulation and implementation across five core thematic areas:

Established in 2010, AFIDEP operates as a Non-Governmental Organization in Kenya and Malawi, and as a 501(c)3 non-profit in the USA. Through evidence generation, advocacy, and capacity building, we seek to accelerate sustainable development across Africa.

We are looking for a dynamic and innovative professional to join our team in the following role:


Position: Post-Doctoral Fellow (Education and Skills Development / Trade and Industrial Development)

AFIDEP is seeking a qualified and passionate expert to contribute to our mission of advancing development in Africa. This position is ideal for a professional with expertise in Education and Skills Development, Industrial Development, or Trade and Investment who is eager to address challenges such as Africa’s demographic transition, the Fourth Industrial Revolution, and the evolving digital economy.

The Post-Doctoral Fellow will work closely with our research and policy teams to generate evidence, engage with policymakers, and support capacity-building initiatives to drive transformative reforms in Africa.


Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  1. Research Design and Implementation
    • Conceptualize, design, and execute research programs on education, trade, industrialization, and job creation policies.
    • Conduct systematic reviews and analyze existing data to generate critical insights for policy and programmatic reforms.
  2. Publications and Communication
    • Prepare a variety of publications, including peer-reviewed journal papers, policy briefs, research reports, and blogs to disseminate research findings effectively.
  3. Policy Engagement
    • Organize policy dialogues with governments and stakeholders at national and regional levels to promote evidence uptake in decision-making.
    • Establish partnerships with government agencies and other stakeholders to ensure research relevance and ownership.
  4. Capacity Development
    • Conduct capacity-strengthening activities to enhance the use of research and evidence in policymaking.
  5. Collaboration and Fundraising
    • Collaborate with teams to contribute to proposal development and fundraising efforts.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Education: A PhD in Education and Skills Development, Industrial Development, Trade and Investment, or a related field.
  • Experience: At least two years of relevant research experience.
  • Skills and Expertise:
    • Proficiency in quantitative research methods and analysis.
    • Experience in multidisciplinary research approaches aimed at sustainable development outcomes.
    • Excellent writing skills, with a track record of peer-reviewed publications and policy-oriented reports.
    • Ability to translate research into actionable policy recommendations.
    • Strong interpersonal and team management skills.
    • Strategic thinking with close attention to detail.
    • In-depth knowledge of emerging issues in African development.
    • Flexibility to adapt to a changing research environment.
