Organizational Context
The IFRC is led by the Secretary General and is structured into three main divisions:
- National Society Development and Operations Coordination
- Global Relations, Humanitarian Diplomacy, and Digitalization
- Management Policy, Strategy, and Corporate Services

This position will be based in Nairobi, Kenya, with regular travel to other African countries. The Communications Officer (Audio Visual) will report to the Regional Communications Manager in Nairobi.
Job Purpose
The Communications Officer (Audio Visual) will be responsible for highlighting humanitarian situations and the Red Cross Red Crescent response through high-quality and compelling video materials. The role includes producing visual content that can be used by media outlets and Movement partners, capturing human impact stories, and ensuring the production of ethical and engaging video content.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Content Strategy
- Develop, implement, and maintain effective content strategies to enhance the visibility of IFRC and African National Societies.
- Lead capacity-building initiatives for National Societies (NS) by training staff and volunteers on communication best practices, including writing, media engagement, and social media management.
Content Production
- Develop an editorial strategy for content collection in Africa, collaborating with the IFRC global communications team.
- Capture and edit high-quality video content and b-roll footage to create compelling human impact stories.
- Systematically gather, record, and submit necessary data for video content, including consent forms and shot lists.
- Adhere to IFRC video guidelines and ethical storytelling principles.
- Travel across Africa to collect content and support NS communications efforts.
Media Relations
- Support media relations by providing timely audio-visual materials.
- Identify opportunities to pitch audio-visual content to media outlets.
- Organize and facilitate media visits to project sites and interviews with IFRC representatives.
- Maintain strong relationships with local, regional, and international media outlets.
Capacity Building
- Train African NS staff on audio-visual communication best practices.
- Guide NS on effectively packaging and sharing content for various platforms.
Emergency Communications & Deployment
- Deploy to affected areas to manage urgent emergency communications.
- Implement rapid response mechanisms for media and online coverage.
- Establish quick contact with affected National Societies for coordinated messaging.
Duties Applicable to All Staff
- Actively contribute to achieving IFRC’s organizational goals.
- Uphold the Red Cross and Red Crescent principles.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by the line manager.
Requirements
Education
- Advanced University Degree in Mass Communication, Film, Journalism, or a related field (Preferred).
- First University Degree with additional years of relevant experience (Accepted).
Experience
- 3 – 5 years of experience in content gathering and production (Required).
- Background in Mass Communications, Marketing, Film, Journalism (Required).
- Work experience with Red Cross/Red Crescent (Preferred).
- Experience in social media management and editing tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Canva, InDesign, and Illustrator (Required).
- Proficiency in operating professional cameras and sound equipment (Required).
- Strong knowledge of the regional context (Preferred).
- International work experience (Preferred).
