Duties and Responsibilities
As a Municipal Physical Planner, you will play a pivotal role in urban planning and development. Your responsibilities will include:
- Urban Land Use Plans: Preparing comprehensive urban land use plans to guide sustainable development.
- Feasibility Studies: Conducting studies on the physical, social, economic, and environmental characteristics of urban areas.
- Plan Implementation: Implementing physical plans for regional urban areas and municipalities.
- Budgeting and Work Plans: Developing budgets and work plans for urban planning units to ensure resource optimization.
- Coordination of Activities: Overseeing urban planning activities in designated urban areas to maintain orderly growth.
- Project Action Plans: Preparing action plans for specific projects, such as residential housing schemes, shopping centers, industrial estates, and recreational facilities.
- Development Proposals: Providing expert advice to government and private agencies on development proposals and plans.
- Feedback and Standards: Implementing and providing feedback on physical and land use planning guidelines and standards.
- Regional Studies: Undertaking thematic regional studies on matters related to physical and land use planning.
- Data Management: Managing municipal physical planning data and providing advice on development control.
- Public Education: Conducting public education programs on physical and land use planning matters to promote awareness and compliance.
- Annual Development Plans: Preparing annual reports on the state of physical planning and development within the municipality.
Requirements for Appointment
To be considered for the position of Municipal Physical Planner, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Educational Background: A Bachelor’s degree in any of the following disciplines:
- Urban and Regional Planning
- Town Planning
- Or any equivalent qualification from a recognized institution.
- Professional Registration: Must be registered as a Physical Planner under the Physical Planners Registration Board (PPRB).
- Experience:
- Have served in the grade of Physical Planner for a minimum of four (4) years, OR
- Have a cumulative working experience of at least two (2) years in a relevant field in the public or private sector.
- Professional Membership: Be a member of the Kenya Institute of Planners or the Architectural Association of Kenya (Town Planning Chapter).
- Computer Proficiency: Possess a certificate in computer application skills from a recognized institution.
- GIS Certification: Have a certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
