Position: Medical Officer (1 Position)
Job Objective
The Medical Officer will be responsible for delivering medical services to students and staff while advising the university on health-related matters. The role involves curative and preventive treatments, medical consultations, and promoting overall health awareness within the institution.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases and conditions of patients by providing curative and preventive treatments.
- Monitor patient progress and response to therapies and/or treatments.
- Maintain patient records and ensure the accuracy of medical information.
- Perform minor surgical procedures for patients with minor complications based on health conditions.
- Promote health education and coordinate healthcare activities in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.
- Collect and analyze data on diseases treated at the health services and provide recommendations to management and health authorities.
- Implement healthcare programs, policies, standards, ethics, and quality assurance systems for efficient and effective service delivery.
- Facilitate referrals for patients requiring hospitalization and conduct follow-ups after admission.
- Ensure patient referrals are directed to appropriate specialists as needed.
- Handle patient complaints and facilitate problem-solving as per the university’s quality procedures.
- Provide professional guidance and consultancy to patients on curative and preventive measures to enhance health awareness.
- Plan and execute healthcare projects and programs aimed at reducing disease prevalence and contribute to the overall strategic direction of the health facility.
- Participate in the preparation of the department’s budget and procurement plan for medical supplies.
- Carry out any other duties as assigned by the supervisor or university management.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree from a recognized/accredited institution.
- Registration with the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council.
- At least five (5) years of post-internship experience.
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
- Proficiency in computer applications.
Other Skills and Competencies
- Proven clinical skills and expertise in diagnosing and managing a wide range of medical conditions.
- A team player with a results-oriented mindset.
- Experience working in an institution of higher learning and knowledge of Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) will be an added advantage.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects.
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
