The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution that generates evidence, strengthens research capacity, and engages policymakers to inform action on health and development across Africa. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, with a regional office in Dakar, Senegal, APHRC is dedicated to driving change through strong African research leadership and evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM).

As part of its Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) Division, APHRC is offering 2025 research internship opportunities across various projects for a period of 3–6 months starting April 2025. These internships provide hands-on experience in research, data analysis, policy engagement, and project implementation.


Available Internship Positions

1. Evaluating the Feasibility and Effectiveness of a Gender-Transformative Parenting Intervention

  • Assist in research on adolescent parenting in Kakamega County.
  • Conduct data collection and analysis.
  • Support field activities and stakeholder engagements.

2. Child Stimulation and Brain Function Study

  • Work with neuroimaging techniques and behavioral measures.
  • Assist in data analysis and interpretation.

3. Early Childhood Development (ECD) Data Visualization System

  • Support development of an ECD data system for Nairobi, Homa Bay, and Isiolo counties.
  • Work with data visualization and reporting tools.

4. Teacher Professional Development (TPD) Practicum/Sex Ed Pipeline

  • Engage in research on teacher training and sexuality education.
  • Support data collection and training modules.

5. Kenya National Survey on Gender Norms, Attitudes, and Well-being of Young Adolescents

  • Participate in nationwide data collection and analysis.
  • Support survey implementation and reporting.

6. Health and Well-being of Very Young Adolescents in Kenya

  • Conduct fieldwork and support research on adolescent health.

7. General Administration (Legal and Compliance)

  • Support legal and compliance research.
  • Assist in policy documentation and regulatory adherence.

8. Partnership for Education of Health Professionals (PEP) Program

  • Provide administrative and research support for health education initiatives.

9. African Research Excellence Fund (AREF) Fellowship Program

  • Assist in coordinating research fellowship programs.

10. WHO HRP Alliance Hub

  • Support research and program implementation.

11. Community of Practice Facilitation and Coordination

  • Assist in organizing and managing knowledge-sharing sessions.

12. Gates’ Virtual Academy (ICT) – Good Financial Grant Practice

  • Provide ICT support for grant management systems.

13. Data Science Without Borders/DASSA

  • Conduct data analysis and modeling in research projects.

14. Agent-Based Modelling (ABM)

  • Support simulation-based research in social sciences.

15. INSPIRE Mental Health

  • Engage in research on mental health interventions.

16. Program Assistant Intern (General) – Data Science Program

  • Provide general support in data science-related projects.

17. Multimorbidity in Africa: Digital Innovation, Visualization, and Application (MADIVA)

  • Assist in health data visualization and analysis.

18. Gates’ Virtual Academy (ICT) – Good Financial Grant Practice (New Project)

  • Support digital tools for financial grant practices.

19. Projects in EYE in Higher Education Focus Areas

  • Research inclusion, gender, and transition in education.

20. Lived Experiences of Abortion in Benin and Togo

  • Support qualitative research and fieldwork.

21. CPSE – Nisaidie, Usinidhuru!

  • Assist in research on post-rape and post-abortion care services.

22. Leveraging HDSS for Family Planning (WARO)

  • Support demographic surveillance and family planning studies.

23. Achieving Cervical Cancer Control through HPV Vaccination (ACCHV)

  • Engage in vaccine research and policy analysis.

24. Consortium for Advanced Research Training Catalyze Project

  • Support research publication visibility and dissemination.

25. Evaluation of The Girls Generation-African Led Movement on Ending FGM/C

  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative analysis on FGM/C interventions.

26. MEL Portal, Data Quality Assurance, and Knowledge Management

  • Assist in monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) processes.

  • Assist in public engagement and community outreach.

33. Optimizing Inclusive Early Learning for Children with Developmental Disabilities

  • Conduct research on inclusive education strategies.

  • Support food systems and nutrition research.

35. Information and Computer Technology (ICT)

  • Assist in IT infrastructure and support.

36. General Support – People and Culture (HR)

  • Provide HR administrative and research assistance.

37. Software Development (Operations)

  • Support software development and IT operations.

38. Gender and Education Focus Area

  • Conduct gender-focused education research.

39. Pipeline Award – Large Language Models for Depression Screening

  • Engage in AI and mental health research.

40. Evaluation of Brown Bag Presentations (BBPs) and Interns & Visiting Scholar Program

  • Assist in evaluating knowledge-sharing sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute a work plan with an assigned supervisor.
  • Participate in research, data collection, and analysis.
  • Contribute to policy engagement and strategic planning.
  • Present research findings at APHRC’s Brown Bag Presentations (BBPs).
  • Submit a final internship report and feedback form.
  • Participate in follow-up evaluation surveys.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Completed a bachelor’s degree and/or pursuing/completed a master’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Strong analytical skills (quantitative and qualitative).
  • Open to nationals of African countries.
  • Hybrid internship with physical availability when required.
