Key Responsibilities:

As a Legal Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring effective legal management of claims, litigation matters, and compliance. Your key duties will include:

  • Legal Claims Handling: Process and reserve legal claims efficiently to ensure fair and timely handling of third-party claims.
  • Judgment Review & Settlement: Review court judgments, settlement proposals, and make recommendations for management approval.
  • Legal Research & Advisory: Conduct legal research and provide expert opinions on legal matters related to insurance.
  • Case Management & Legal Diary: Track and monitor court schedules, ensuring timely witness attendance.
  • Claims and Litigation Monitoring: Oversee suits filed against the insured and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Reserve Reviews: Regularly review reserves to maintain financial accuracy in claims handling.
  • Settlement of Judgments: Ensure prompt payments as per turnaround times (TATs) to prevent legal repercussions such as proclamations and auctioneers’ involvement.
  • Legal Opinions: Provide well-researched legal opinions on claims and litigation matters affecting the company.
  • Cost Management: Strategically manage claims costs to maintain profitability and efficiency.
  • Insurance Recoveries: Drive subrogation efforts to recover losses from third parties.
  • Legal Compliance & Documentation: Maintain legal registers, track decretal deposits, and update case statuses accordingly.
  • Excess Collection & Compliance: Follow up on third-party property damage (TPPD) and injury excess collections to ensure compliance.
  • Regulatory & Audit Compliance: Ensure adherence to statutory, regulatory, and internal control processes, including implementing internal and external audit recommendations.

Academic and Professional Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Law (LLB) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Professional Qualification: Diploma in Legal Practice.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a legal role, preferably within the insurance industry or related sectors.
