The Special Assets Relationship Manager for Commercial and SME portfolios is responsible for managing turnaround and recovery strategies for special assets within these portfolios. The role involves determining objectives, strategies, and actions to mitigate business risks, enhance the bank’s financial recovery, and manage exit solutions efficiently.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Responsibilities

  • Achieve set targets for collections, recoveries, case life, and impairment management within the assigned portfolio.
  • Lead negotiations with customers, both individually and in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders, to implement recovery strategies.
  • Negotiate and recommend settlement proposals for non-performing loans, including making recommendations on write-offs.
  • Develop and implement proactive recovery and exit strategies.
  • Maintain strong professional relationships with customers while effectively communicating difficult messages.
  • Handle politically sensitive customer accounts and recover debts in a professional manner.
  • Serve as a reference point for Special Asset and credit teams regarding specific cases.
  • Ensure appropriate turnaround or recovery strategies are in place, while providing legal support to general management and business functions on impaired debts.
  • Set and monitor service level agreements with internal stakeholders to maintain high-quality service levels.

Internal Business Processes

  • Obtain necessary credit and sanction approvals for strategies, expenditures, and impairments as required.
  • Analyze loan proposals to ensure they meet the bank’s risk acceptance criteria.
  • Validate all loan-related documents before processing and ensure adherence to all conditions outlined in the letters of offer.
  • Strictly comply with the bank’s operating procedures, policies, AML, and KYC guidelines.
  • Prepare and submit detailed reports for accurate decision-making by stakeholders.
  • Manage provisioning processes in accordance with bank and regulatory policies.
  • Monitor relationships with the bank’s external service providers, including liquidators, auctioneers, lawyers, judicial managers, accountants, receivers, and valuators.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of non-performing loans and ensure data integrity.
  • Actively review and monitor the credit portfolio to identify early warning signs of default and take corrective measures.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and internal audit standards.

Customer Management

  • Work closely with clients and Relationship Managers to focus on recovery efforts for each vulnerable account.
  • Conduct client visits and attend meetings at bank premises or off-site as needed.
  • Address customer inquiries promptly while managing their expectations.
  • Participate in strategy discussions with internal and external stakeholders to adopt effective recovery plans.
  • Assess customers using objective criteria to mitigate risks and enhance recoveries.
  • Maintain positive client relationships and manage expectations to improve customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Learning and Growth

  • Set personal development plans and actively seek professional growth opportunities.
  • Utilize management information (MI) tools to monitor and provide feedback on performance.

Minimum Qualifications, Knowledge, and Experience

Academic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a business-related field from a recognized institution.
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field will be an added advantage.

Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a financial environment, with at least 3 years in relationship management and recoveries of distressed asset portfolios.
  • Extensive experience in credit appraisal and loan portfolio management.
  • Sales experience in the real estate industry, preferably within a banking institution, is an added advantage.
  • Proven ability to engage with C-level management and senior executives for decision-making and reporting.
