Job Description – Theatre Technician
As a Theatre Technician, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring the operating room runs smoothly and all surgical procedures are supported with precision, efficiency, and professionalism. You will be a key support to surgeons, nurses, anaesthetists, and other medical staff during surgical operations and procedures. This position requires hands-on expertise, attention to detail, and a proactive approach in a high-pressure environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform pre-operative checks to ensure that all anaesthetic machines are tested for leakage and in good working condition.
- Prepare the operating theatre prior to surgeries, ensuring all instruments and supplies are available and functioning correctly.
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the operating room before, during, and after surgical procedures.
- Sterilize and disinfect surgical instruments and equipment after each procedure.
- Prepare surgical instruments and equipment for autoclaving/sterilization in accordance with hospital protocols.
- Assist in the physical preparation of patients for surgery, including cleansing and shaving of the surgical area when required.
- Maintain sterility of surgical tools and ensure they are correctly arranged and handled.
- Monitor and maintain an inventory of necessary supplies within the operating room.
- Escort and assist patients entering and exiting the operating room.
- Provide intraoperative assistance to surgeons by passing instruments, cutting sutures, and operating equipment as directed.
- Monitor patient needs during procedures and communicate effectively with surgical team members.
- Deliver surgical specimens to the laboratory and ensure proper disposal of waste materials from surgeries.
- Coordinate closely with surgeons, nurses, and laboratory staff to ensure optimal surgical outcomes.
- Sterilize and restock the operating room post-surgery to ensure readiness for the next procedure.
- Report any malfunctioning or damaged surgical instruments and equipment for immediate repair or replacement.
- Carry out additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the theatre in-charge.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Diploma in Theatre Technology from a recognized institution.
- At least two (2) years of relevant post-qualification experience in a busy hospital theatre environment.
- Experience working as an Anaesthetic Assistant will be considered a significant advantage.
