Brief Overview
As an Engineer in the Regional Support Core Network team, you will be the first line of defense for ensuring the health, availability, and optimal performance of our core network infrastructure and systems hosted within Safaricom’s data centers. You will handle fault management, manage network changes, support ongoing projects, and ensure business continuity through proactive and reactive measures.
This role is vital in maintaining the seamless connectivity and service quality that millions of Safaricom customers rely on every day.
Key Responsibilities
Network Operations and Support
- Analyze Network Element (NE) logs and conduct database audits.
- Troubleshoot and resolve faults related to core network systems (MSSs, MGWs, SGSNs, MMEs, GGSNs, PGWs, PCRFs, CSDB, STP, DRA, Cloud Infrastructure, Routers, and Switches).
- Respond to faults escalated from Network Operations Center (NOC) and customer-facing teams.
- Provide permanent and workable technical solutions to reduce service downtimes and prevent repeat incidents.
Preventive Maintenance & Performance Management
- Plan and execute preventive maintenance tasks following predefined standards.
- Monitor and track Network and Service Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to ensure alignment with Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
- Evaluate the performance of Managed Services Providers operating within Safaricom’s data centers.
Configuration & Change Management
- Implement configuration changes on network elements, including software upgrades.
- Provision new core network services and elements as needed.
- Schedule and automate network tasks while ensuring minimal disruption and meeting change management objectives.
- Maintain detailed logs of all changes conducted on-site and ensure all support documentation is filed appropriately at the time of system commissioning.
Data Center Operations
- Maintain a real-time inventory of all data center assets.
- Monitor and allocate data center resources in accordance with operational plans.
- Optimize the usage of data center resources to ensure efficiency and scalability.
Business Continuity & Risk Management
- Plan, schedule, and execute business continuity tests and other related activities at designated sites.
- Ensure all data center high-availability mechanisms are functioning and proactively prevent service interruptions.
- Champion Health & Safety (H&S) activities and ensure compliance with Safaricom’s H&S policies for all data center visitors and personnel.
What We’re Looking For
We are seeking individuals who are highly self-organized, take initiative, and have a strong sense of accountability and integrity. The successful candidate must be capable of handling multiple tasks effectively and collaboratively within a high-performance team.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field.
- Solid understanding of Core Network Systems including IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), CS (Circuit Switched), PS (Packet Switched), and SDM (Subscriber Data Management).
- Familiarity with VoLTE (Voice over LTE), VoBB (Voice over Broadband), CS and PS protocols and interfaces.
- Basic knowledge of scripting or programming.
- Cloud certifications are an added advantage.
- CCNA or related certifications will also be beneficial.
- Strong analytical and report-writing skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
