Are you passionate about the intersection of storytelling, innovation, and social impact? Do you believe in the power of words to ignite change, amplify unheard voices, and reshape systems? At Amref Health Africa, we’re looking for a dynamic and visionary Innovation Storyteller to bring to life the transformative journeys of health entrepreneurs and leaders across the continent.

With over 180 programs across 35 African countries and a dedicated workforce of more than 2,000 staff, our reach and impact continue to grow. We believe that lasting health change in Africa must be rooted in the power of its people and communities.

We are currently implementing the Learning for Life (L4L): Building a Resilient and Responsive Health Workforce in Africa programme, in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation. Spanning Kenya, Senegal, and Zambia, this initiative focuses on building capacity in the health sector by creating sustainable jobs, empowering young innovators, and transforming leadership for future-ready health systems.

As the Innovation Storyteller, you won’t just be creating content—you’ll be shaping narratives that spotlight hope, creativity, and health resilience across Africa.

This ambitious 4-year partnership with the Mastercard Foundation is about more than healthcare—it’s about enabling Africa’s next generation of leaders and changemakers in health.

Job Description: Innovation Storyteller

As the Innovation Storyteller, your mission is to turn complex health and innovation data into compelling, human-centred stories that resonate with a wide array of audiences. From blog posts to photo essays, from social media campaigns to short documentaries—you’ll be crafting the messages that move hearts and minds.

This role demands creativity, strategic thinking, and a strong commitment to elevating the voices and ideas that are transforming health in Africa.

Key Responsibilities

1. Build a Storytelling Strategy

  • Co-develop a dynamic, evolving storytelling strategy aligned with the goals of the L4L programme and Amref’s innovation and entrepreneurship vision.

2. Craft Human-Centered Stories

  • Transform program data, health insights, and personal journeys into narratives that inspire and inform—highlighting the “why” behind every innovation.

3. Experiment Fearlessly

  • Explore and push the boundaries of storytelling through diverse formats such as animations, podcasts, photo essays, blogs, mini-documentaries, interactive media, and more.

4. Engage Diverse Audiences

  • Tailor stories to connect with a variety of stakeholders—community health workers, young African innovators, policymakers, donors, and international partners.

5. Content Creation

  • Lead the production of written, visual, and multimedia content including video scripts, campaign messaging, digital storytelling assets, and success case studies.

6. Channel Management

  • Disseminate stories through a variety of platforms—Amref’s website, social media, newsletters, and third-party media—to amplify impact.

7. Creative Direction

  • Guide the entire content development process, from ideation to execution, collaborating with designers, video editors, and communications partners.

8. Internal Systems Development

  • Create streamlined systems for sourcing, curating, and archiving storytelling assets and content libraries to support long-term narrative impact.

9. M&E for Storytelling

  • Develop metrics and systems to measure the reach, engagement, and influence of storytelling campaigns. Use insights to continuously optimize content strategy.

Ideal Candidate Profile

This is a unique opportunity for a talented communicator with a proven ability to tell powerful, purpose-driven stories that deliver measurable impact. We’re looking for someone who can see both the forest and the trees—someone equally comfortable crafting micro-stories and big-picture campaigns.

Experience & Skills Required:

  • At least five (5) years of progressive experience in journalism, communications, digital marketing, public relations, or related fields.
  • A strong track record of storytelling with demonstrable impact—especially within the health, innovation, or entrepreneurship sectors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to distill technical data into engaging stories.
  • Experience across multiple media formats (print, video, digital, social).
  • Strong project management abilities with sharp attention to detail.
  • A collaborative and creative mindset, with an ability to work across diverse cultures and teams.
  • Familiarity with health systems, global health, or entrepreneurship ecosystems is desirable (but not mandatory).
  • Fluency in English is essential; French proficiency is an added advantage.
