Job Purpose

The primary responsibility of the Driver – EMT is to safely operate ambulances and vehicles for the transport of Avenue Healthcare’s clients and staff, ensuring reliable, professional, and compassionate service delivery at all times. The role also involves a clinical support function, assessing patients and coordinating with medical personnel during emergencies.


Key Responsibilities

Ambulance & Vehicle Maintenance

  • Maintain cleanliness, security, and readiness of the ambulance; prohibit unauthorized passengers.
  • Conduct daily checks to ensure vehicle components—lights, horn, siren, tyres, brakes—are in proper working condition.
  • Monitor and top up essential fluids such as engine oil, brake fluid, and fuel levels.
  • Ensure vehicle is stocked with safety and medical equipment: spare tire, spanner, emergency triangle, first aid kit, etc.
  • Update and maintain the vehicle logbook, including trip mileage and fuel consumption records.
  • Monitor and notify management of upcoming license and insurance expirations (minimum 2 weeks’ notice).
  • Immediately report and document all incidents, mechanical issues, and delays, and take prompt action for resolution.

Medical Readiness

  • Ensure the ambulance is fully stocked with necessary medical supplies, documentation, and consumables.
  • Confirm that all emergency equipment is functional and ready for use.

Transport Coordination

  • Assist in managing the dispatch desk by scheduling and allocating vehicles and drivers efficiently.
  • Keep accurate records of all transport bookings and dispatches.
  • Confirm transport bookings, handle emergency calls, and provide real-time communication and updates.

Emergency Medical Services

  • Assess patients at the scene and while in transit.
  • Communicate clearly with medical personnel to determine and implement appropriate patient care strategies.

Compliance and Governance

  • Adhere to all corporate governance guidelines, including fraud detection and reporting.
  • Implement audit recommendations and internal controls.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of and compliance with all Avenue Healthcare policies and systems—particularly those related to medical and financial operations.

Additional Duties

  • Undertake any other tasks or responsibilities as directed by the supervisor to support departmental goals and organizational mission.

Person Specification

  • Certificate in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) with a valid practicing/operating card.
  • Valid driving license with a minimum of 2 years’ experience as an EMT Operator.
  • Customer-focused and results-oriented.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively within a team.
  • Highly responsive, ethical, and responsible with a strong sense of duty.
