Job Purpose
The Locum Nurse will be stationed at our 24-hour Control Centre and will be responsible for managing incoming communications related to AMREF Flying Doctors’ services. These include medical evacuations, ground ambulance coordination, and medical assistance services such as Guarantee of Payment (GOP) placements and medical report follow-ups.
The successful candidate will play a key role in mission readiness, documentation accuracy, and internal coordination, ensuring all necessary communication and records are maintained for safe and effective operations.
Key Responsibilities
Control Centre Operations
- Operate the 24-hour Control Centre using modern communication systems including radio (UHF/UVF).
- Receive and respond to phone calls and emails related to emergency and routine operations.
- Document all communications accurately, ensuring complete and up-to-date records.
Communication & Coordination
- Communicate effectively and promptly with internal and external stakeholders such as hospitals, EMS teams, and aeromedical personnel.
- Relay critical messages to flight nurses and aeromedical coordinators.
- Maintain continuous contact with patients, family members, and referring medical institutions during and after operations.
Emergency Response
- Receive and respond to emergency evacuation requests by gathering patient details including medical and personal information.
- Inform clients about cost estimates and dispatch GOP documentation.
- Coordinate with aeromedical teams to deploy resources as per operational needs.
- Be available for Ground Ambulance standby and travel to mass accident sites with emergency supplies.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain comprehensive records across CRM systems, SAMs, and physical Admission books.
- Ensure flight files are complete with checklists and supporting documents.
- Handle and archive all patient correspondences properly.
- Provide accurate handover notes and ensure case files are up to date and complete.
Customer Service
- Address internal and external queries and complaints professionally and empathetically.
- Follow up with hospitals on in-patient progress and document updates in the medical assistance case files.
Team & Administrative Support
- Attend scheduled departmental and unit meetings.
- Provide support for any related work activities as assigned by the supervisor.
Preferred Experience and Knowledge
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in a busy medical facility.
- Strong understanding of aero-medical operations and emergency care.
- Prior exposure to CRM systems and digital documentation tools is advantageous.
- Proven track record in customer service and interpersonal communication.

- Strong interpersonal and empathetic approach in dealing with patients and stakeholders.
- Ability to remain calm under pressure and operate with integrity and confidentiality.

- Capacity to work in a team-oriented environment and adapt to a 24/7 work schedule.
Work Environment
- The nature of AMREF Flying Doctors’ operations demands availability across all hours including nights, weekends, and public holidays.
- The role requires readiness to respond to emergencies, which may involve travel to remote locations or disaster sites.
