Role Summary

The IB Physical and Health Education Teacher will be responsible for delivering a high-quality physical education curriculum that aligns with the Academy’s academic standards and IB programme goals. The role demands a dynamic educator who can inspire students, promote physical health and well-being, encourage sportsmanship, and cultivate teamwork. For candidates with appropriate qualifications and leadership experience, there is potential consideration for the role of Head of Department.

Key Responsibilities

Curriculum Implementation and Instruction

  • Deliver the IB Physical and Health Education curriculum effectively across the relevant grade levels.
  • Design and implement engaging lesson plans that foster physical fitness, motor skills development, and overall health awareness.
  • Employ diverse teaching strategies that accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
  • Integrate health education components to prepare students with lifelong health and wellness knowledge.

Student Development and Evaluation

  • Assess and evaluate student performance with a focus on personal progress, skill acquisition, and participation.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive student records that reflect learning outcomes, progress, and growth.
  • Provide timely and constructive feedback to students to support continuous improvement.
  • Develop individualized support strategies for students needing additional guidance or support in physical education.

Event Planning and Sports Programming

  • Plan and execute the school’s termly and annual sports calendar, including fixtures and events.
  • Organize and lead key events such as sports days, inter-house competitions, and health awareness weeks.
  • Coordinate inter-school tournaments to promote competitive sporting experiences for students.
  • Supervise and coach various school sports teams in preparation for both internal and external competitions.

Extra-Curricular Engagement

  • Lead and manage extracurricular sports activities, ensuring a broad range of options for student engagement.
  • Encourage participation across all student demographics, promoting inclusivity in school sports.
  • Provide leadership in organizing fitness clubs, recreational sports, and after-school programmes that promote healthy lifestyles.

Departmental Coordination and Budget Management

  • Collaborate with the school’s leadership team to prepare and manage the games department’s annual budget.
  • Ensure efficient use of resources and maintain sports equipment and facilities.
  • If appointed as Head of Department, oversee the departmental team, provide mentorship, and ensure curriculum alignment and instructional quality.

Community and School Involvement

  • Build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues to support a vibrant school culture.
  • Participate in whole-school events, professional development sessions, and committee work as needed.
  • Act as a role model for students, demonstrating integrity, teamwork, and a passion for learning.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Education (Physical Education specialization) from a recognized institution.
  • A minimum of five years’ teaching experience in a reputable educational institution.
  • Registration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) of Kenya.
  • Strong background in IB programmes is an added advantage, though not mandatory.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize school-wide events and manage multiple sports disciplines.
  • Capacity to coach, motivate, and mentor students across various age groups and skill levels.

The ideal candidate is an experienced, energetic, and enthusiastic educator who brings creativity, initiative, and a passion for promoting physical fitness and well-being in young people. You should be a strong team player with the ability to take initiative and work collaboratively with staff, parents, and the wider school community.

You should also possess excellent organizational and communication skills, a learner-centered approach to instruction, and the ability to adapt teaching strategies to suit a diverse, multicultural student population.
