Job Description and Responsibilities

Main Purpose of the Role

The Multi-Skilled Technician will be responsible for the provision of high-quality, multidisciplinary maintenance support for the British High Commission’s infrastructure. This includes office buildings and potentially residential properties, with an emphasis on safety, functionality, and preventative care.

The role is essential to the continued maintenance of the newly renovated Phase 1 of the British High Commission’s modern office space. It will also support the onboarding of Phase 2 workspaces, a project expected to continue through February 2026.


Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and emergency maintenance activities across multiple technical trades.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems including lighting fixtures, power outlets, and distribution boards.
  • Install and maintain plumbing systems including toilets, taps, drainage lines, and other related components.
  • Carry out welding and fabrication work to support structural and custom hardware needs.
  • Execute general handyman duties such as:
    • Door and furniture repairs
    • Minor masonry
    • Assembly of furnishings
  • Prepare, patch, and paint surfaces to maintain professional appearance and prevent wear.
  • Mount shelves, picture frames, and signage with precision and without damaging surfaces.
  • Participate in and support Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) schedules.
  • Maintain accurate documentation on all maintenance work completed and the materials used.
  • Adhere strictly to occupational health and safety regulations and internal operational standards.

Resources and Teamwork

  • While the role is primarily hands-on, the technician may occasionally be required to supervise external contractors during project executions or scheduled maintenance works.
  • The technician will work closely with the Estates team and other colleagues within the High Commission to coordinate maintenance schedules and emergencies.

Essential Skills and Experience

To be considered for the position, applicants must demonstrate substantial experience in at least three or more of the following areas:

  • Electrical Maintenance and Repair: Installation, troubleshooting, and replacement of wiring, lighting, and outlets.
  • Plumbing: Maintenance of water supply and drainage systems.
  • Welding and Fabrication: Proficiency in structural and metalwork repairs and installation.
  • General Handyman Duties: Including but not limited to:
    • Woodwork
    • Minor repairs
    • Painting
    • Basic construction and assembly tasks
  • Technical Literacy: Ability to read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and operation manuals.
  • Problem Solving: Strong diagnostic abilities and initiative in resolving facility issues.
  • Communication and Teamwork: Clear communication with team members and end-users.
  • Independence and Time Management: Ability to manage own workload and priorities efficiently.

Desirable Skills and Certifications (Not Mandatory)

  • Trade certifications in:
    • Electrical Maintenance
    • Welding and Fabrication
    • Plumbing
    • Masonry
    • Painting and Decorating
    • Mechanical Maintenance
  • Health and Safety certifications such as:
    • Safe Work Procedures
    • Use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Additional qualifications in any of the listed trades or occupational health training will be an added advantage.

Working Environment and Terms

  • All employees are subject to the terms and conditions of employment as outlined by Kenyan labour law and British High Commission Nairobi policies.
  • Candidates must already have the legal right to live and work in Kenya.
  • Employees not liable to pay Kenyan income tax may have their salary adjusted by the equivalent tax amount.
  • All successful applicants will undergo background checks and a security clearance process before final appointment.
  • This role is offered on a 12-month fixed-term contract, with the potential for renewal based on funding, performance, and operational needs.
