In 2021, President Emmanuel Macron launched the Marianne Initiative for Human Rights Defenders, with the aim of providing stronger support to those who fight for human rights, both abroad and in France.
The Marianne Association for Human Rights Defenders was established to unite key actors in France—government bodies, human rights and support organizations, local authorities, and prominent figures—around the Initiative’s mission. It is responsible for implementing the Initiative’s French-based support pillar, which benefits around fifteen laureates each year through personalized support, accommodation, training, and networking opportunities.
Since its launch, around fifteen men and women from across all continents have been hosted in France for six months as part of the program. Laureates benefit from a comprehensive training program designed to strengthen their capacity and commitment to human rights, whether in their home countries or in France. This includes support for work in the areas of civil and political rights, women’s rights, minority rights, and environmental rights.
