Overall Purpose of the Role
The IT Intern will serve as the primary point of contact for all IT-related matters at the DRC Kenya Eastleigh field office. The intern will play a vital role in supporting the office’s technology infrastructure by maintaining hardware and software systems, ensuring proper network functionality, assisting with data backups and cyber security, and supporting training and technical needs within DRC’s Eastleigh operations.
Working in close coordination with the DRC Information Management Systems (IMS) Coordinator, the intern will be involved in the planning, development, implementation, and integration of hardware and software systems, as well as the ongoing support of a management information system or enterprise network.
Duties and Responsibilities
The IT Intern will be responsible for a wide range of tasks that support the overall functionality and performance of DRC’s IT systems in the Eastleigh office:
- Installation and Configuration
- Set up and configure computer hardware, software, networks, printers, and scanners.
- Ensure all software is licensed and properly installed in accordance with DRC policies.
- Work with the IMS Coordinator to resolve faults and technical issues efficiently.
- Technical Support
- Provide on-demand technical assistance to staff for both hardware and software issues.
- Support users in resolving daily challenges with email, internet, application access, and other IT tools.
- Maintain user satisfaction through timely and courteous support services.
- Data Management
- Ensure all staff members back up their data regularly to OneDrive and SharePoint in compliance with DRC’s data security policies.
- Monitor backup systems and address any gaps or inconsistencies proactively.
- Training and Digital Literacy
- Assist in delivering digital skills training sessions to youth at the DRC Eastleigh digital workspace.
- Prepare and submit weekly reports detailing training activities, attendance, and learning outcomes.
- Systems Monitoring
- Perform daily monitoring of servers to ensure optimal performance, system uptime, and overall availability.
- Identify performance bottlenecks or network issues and take necessary actions to resolve them.
- Database Support
- Maintain and improve beneficiary databases, ensuring timely updates and secure backups.
- Provide technical assistance in managing data integrity and data cleaning processes.
- Reporting
- Generate and submit monthly reports on system usage, performance metrics, and IT service delivery.
- Document incidents, actions taken, and outcomes for future reference and learning.
- Security and Maintenance
- Monitor software and network security to prevent unauthorized access or breaches.
- Regularly conduct preventative maintenance activities to minimize downtime.
- Undertake minor development tasks on the IMS platform as instructed.
Experience and Technical Competencies
To be successful in this internship role, applicants should have a strong foundation in IT concepts and technologies, coupled with practical experience and a willingness to learn. The key technical competencies include:
- At least one year of hands-on experience in an IT support role within a fast-paced organization.
- Practical knowledge and experience in HTML, PHP-MVC, JavaScript, and CSS.
- Familiarity with the CodeIgniter framework is a plus.
- Basic understanding of relational databases, especially MySQL.
- Competence in supporting both Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows 10 operating systems.
- Solid understanding of Microsoft 365 and general Microsoft Office environments.
- Strong analytical and research skills, with keen attention to detail.
- A cheerful, articulate, and positive attitude with a commitment to continuous learning.
Education Requirements
Applicants must possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Information Technology or a closely related field from a recognized institution.
- Certification in computer networks such as CCNA, Network+, or similar qualifications is desirable.
Languages
- Fluency in English and Kiswahili is required for effective communication with both internal staff and external stakeholders.

Conditions
- The internship is a full-time position based in Eastleigh, Nairobi.
- Interns will receive a stipend in line with DRC’s Internship Guidelines.
- The position is expected to commence in August 2025.
- The contract duration is initially for six months, with a possible extension of three additional months depending on funding and performance.
Key Internal and External Relationships
- Internal: All DRC staff within the Kenya country program, including the Eastleigh field office and national support services.
- External: Service providers, digital training participants, community partners, and members of the refugee and host communities.
