We invite qualified candidates to apply for the position of Fulltime Faculty, Dermatology, based in Nairobi, Kenya.
Position Overview
The Faculty of Dermatology will be a key contributor to the clinical, educational, and research missions of the Department of Medicine. This position offers the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary academic health sciences centre while advancing excellence in dermatology care and training. The faculty member will work closely with residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals, contributing to their education and mentoring while upholding the highest standards of clinical care.
This role is ideally suited for a dermatologist who is passionate about teaching, research, and providing compassionate and evidence-based care to patients. The individual must be able to work collaboratively within a dynamic academic setting and actively participate in departmental planning and development.
Key Responsibilities
The Fulltime Faculty, Dermatology will be responsible for the following core functions:
1. Clinical Service Delivery
- Provide high-quality clinical care to patients through inpatient and outpatient dermatology services.
- Participate in diagnosing and managing dermatological cases referred to the department.
- Admit and consult on patients in the dermatology service and ensure effective coordination of care.
- Conduct dermatology clinics at AKUH-Nairobi and a defined outreach clinic within Nairobi.
- Order and interpret relevant laboratory and radiologic investigations in patient management.
- Collaborate with other specialists and sub-specialists to ensure multidisciplinary care of complex cases.
2. Academic and Educational Roles
- Participate actively in the design and delivery of dermatology teaching modules for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
- Supervise residents during their dermatology clinic rotation, offering mentorship and real-time clinical guidance.
- Develop and implement innovative teaching methodologies and assessment tools that enhance learning outcomes.
- Contribute to curriculum development, planning academic schedules, and evaluating program effectiveness.
- Facilitate case discussions, journal clubs, clinical demonstrations, and seminars for students and residents.
3. Leadership and Strategic Planning
- Play a leadership role in establishing a robust and efficient dermatology service within the Department of Medicine.
- Contribute to the formulation and implementation of short- and long-term strategic plans for dermatology services.
- Work closely with departmental leadership to identify service gaps, prioritize growth areas, and ensure service excellence.
- Establish and enforce operational policies, procedures, rules, and regulations that guide the dermatology programme.
- Maintain a culture of continuous quality improvement within the dermatology service.
4. Research and Scholarly Activity
- Promote a research-oriented environment by initiating and participating in clinical, translational, or public health research projects.
- Encourage evidence-based practice by integrating the latest research findings into clinical care and teaching.
- Publish scholarly articles in peer-reviewed journals and present findings at scientific conferences.
- Mentor junior faculty and students in research activities, including proposal writing, data collection, and publication processes.
- Collaborate with regional and international partners to conduct impactful research relevant to dermatology and skin health in East Africa.
5. Quality Assurance and Compliance
- Develop and implement a quality assurance programme for dermatology services.
- Ensure adherence to ethical, professional, and institutional guidelines in clinical and academic duties.
- Monitor patient outcomes and satisfaction to guide service improvement initiatives.
- Participate in internal audits, accreditation processes, and regulatory compliance reviews.
Professional and Institutional Collaboration
- Represent the Department of Medicine and the dermatology faculty in institutional committees and external forums as required.
- Work collaboratively with internal stakeholders including other departments, AKU hospitals, and AKU’s global campuses.
- Foster partnerships with regional medical institutions, professional bodies, and community organizations to enhance dermatology services and training.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Possess a Master of Medicine (MMed) or its equivalent in a relevant field.
- Registered with the Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board of Kenya.
- Have completed a recognized fellowship in Dermatology.
- Demonstrated teaching and research experience with at least two (2) years of clinical experience in dermatology.
- Be a competent and recognized specialist as per the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Board standards.
- Possess strong innovation and managerial capabilities to contribute to program development and academic growth.
- Exhibit excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
- Capable of guiding and mentoring multidisciplinary teams in a dynamic academic and clinical environment.
