Job Summary

The full-time Lecturer in Medical Physiology will be responsible for delivering high-quality instruction in Medical Physiology to undergraduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) and the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSc Nursing) programmes. This role demands not only excellence in teaching but also a strong research acumen and the ability to contribute to curriculum innovation and academic leadership.

The successful candidate will be embedded within the vibrant academic environment of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, and will be expected to engage collaboratively with faculty members from diverse disciplines. The Lecturer will also contribute to the development of a rigorous and integrative curriculum, engage in scholarly research, and support the academic growth of students through mentorship and advising.

Key Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities of the Lecturer in Medical Physiology include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Teaching and Academic Support
    • Deliver high-quality lectures and practical sessions in Medical Physiology for MBChB and BSc Nursing students.
    • Use evidence-informed, interactive teaching methods tailored to both large and small class settings.
    • Incorporate digital tools and online platforms to enhance teaching and facilitate blended learning.
    • Provide academic advice and mentorship to students, supporting their academic progress and career development.
  2. Curriculum Development and Innovation
    • Participate in the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Medical Physiology curriculum.
    • Work collaboratively with colleagues in the Department and across other disciplines to ensure the integration of content that aligns with current trends in health sciences education.
    • Contribute to the formulation and review of assessment strategies to ensure alignment with learning objectives and educational outcomes.
    • Stay abreast of developments in medical education and bring innovative teaching approaches to the programme.
  3. Quality Assurance and Evaluation
    • Contribute to regular evaluations of the Medical Physiology teaching blocks, focusing on content relevance, delivery methods, and assessment tools.
    • Participate in departmental meetings, curriculum review committees, and academic audits.
    • Ensure compliance with AKU’s academic policies and contribute to quality enhancement measures.
  4. Research and Scholarly Contributions
    • Develop research proposals and seek funding for projects that contribute to the advancement of knowledge in Medical Physiology or medical education.
    • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed international journals and present at academic conferences, seminars, workshops, and symposia.
    • Collaborate with colleagues within the university and externally to build productive research partnerships.
    • Encourage a research-led teaching environment by integrating research insights into the classroom.
  5. Interdisciplinary and Institutional Collaboration
    • Work closely with faculty from the Medical College and the School of Nursing and Midwifery (SONAM) to foster an integrated and interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning.
    • Represent AKU in national and regional academic forums, conferences, and networks related to Medical Physiology and medical education.
    • Promote AKU’s academic brand by building and maintaining professional relationships with academic and industry partners.
  6. Leadership and Academic Engagement
    • Take on administrative responsibilities as assigned by the department, such as serving on committees or leading specific academic projects.
    • Contribute to faculty development activities, mentoring junior staff and supporting capacity-building initiatives.
    • Engage in outreach and advocacy for Biomedical Sciences education in the region.

Position Requirements

  • A Medical degree or a good honours degree in Medical Physiology or a related discipline.
  • A postgraduate degree in Medical Physiology or a closely related subject.
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching Medical Physiology at the undergraduate level, especially within a medical or nursing education context.
  • Proficiency in delivering engaging lectures and practicals for both small and large groups, with evidence of using modern, interactive, and student-centred teaching methodologies.
  • Competence in integrating technology in education, including the use of learning management systems and e-learning platforms.
  • Proven experience in educational management, with a commitment to delivering well-organized, high-quality academic programmes.
  • A strong record of scholarly publications in peer-reviewed international journals.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with an ability to inspire students and collaborate effectively with colleagues.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a flexible, team-oriented approach to academic work.
  • Capability and willingness to engage in academic leadership and service roles.
  • Experience in curriculum development, quality assurance, and academic programme evaluation will be an added advantage.
