About the Role

The Head of Global Outreach and Engagement holds a central position within CIFOR-ICRAF’s global communication ecosystem. Reporting to the Director of Communication, Outreach and Engagement, the incumbent will work closely with senior management, researchers, donors, and international partners to design and execute compelling, evidence-based global engagement strategies.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated and strategic thinker with a strong journalism or communications background, a track record of managing complex teams and projects, and a passion for making science accessible and impactful.

Key Responsibilities

1. Strategic Communication Planning and Execution

  • Develop, implement, and monitor the outreach and engagement components of CIFOR-ICRAF’s global communication strategy.
  • Lead strategic executive and senior-level communications coordination for all public-facing events. This includes:
    • Crafting compelling messaging and speechwriting
    • Supporting presentation development
    • Coordinating media coverage and social media interaction
    • Liaising with internal stakeholders and external partners
  • Provide regular progress reports and insights on communication and outreach impact.

2. Event Strategy and Oversight

  • Lead CIFOR-ICRAF’s participation in global, regional, and national events.
  • Manage the events team to ensure efficient planning, flawless execution, and maximized visibility.
  • Work closely with researchers and partners to align event content with institutional objectives.

3. Social Media Program Management

  • Guide the strategic direction of CIFOR-ICRAF’s social media presence.
  • Oversee content creation, implementation schedules, and metrics tracking to ensure that social media outputs are engaging and impactful.
  • Encourage innovation and platform optimization to reach target audiences effectively.

4. Media Relations

  • Develop and execute a media relations strategy that positions CIFOR-ICRAF as a leading voice in forestry, agroforestry, and sustainable development.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with international, regional, and local journalists.
  • Manage incoming media inquiries and proactively pitch stories and expert commentary.
  • Monitor media coverage and assess impact.

5. Digital and Editorial Oversight

  • Supervise editorial operations for the organization’s websites and news platforms.
  • Lead content planning and ensure timely delivery of high-quality written outputs.
  • Coordinate with a team of editors, writers, and digital strategists to maintain consistency, accuracy, and relevance of all published materials.

6. Email Marketing Campaigns

  • Oversee strategic planning and delivery of organization-wide email marketing campaigns.
  • Monitor campaign performance, segment audiences, and refine strategies based on data and feedback.

7. Multimedia Production

  • Manage CIFOR-ICRAF’s film and photography portfolio.
  • Ensure that multimedia assets align with campaign goals and support storytelling across all channels.
  • Supervise the scheduling and logistics of multimedia projects.

8. Budget and Team Management

  • Administer the Communications, Outreach and Engagement budget efficiently.
  • Ensure all activities are completed on time, within scope, and meet high-quality standards.
  • Provide mentorship and leadership to a globally dispersed team, fostering collaboration and accountability.

Requirements and Expertise

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree or equivalent experience in communications, international relations, journalism, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in a fast-paced communication environment, preferably with an international organization and with a strong emphasis on scientific content.

Technical Competencies

  • Proven expertise in developing and executing integrated communication strategies targeting diverse global audiences.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, ideally honed through a background in journalism or media production.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate complex events and outreach campaigns at international scale.
  • Fluency in traditional and social media dynamics, including what it takes to pitch, promote, and amplify content effectively.
  • Advanced project management capabilities, including experience with digital tools for tracking progress, measuring outcomes, and coordinating across teams.
  • A strong understanding of global development issues, particularly as they relate to climate change, agriculture, food systems, and sustainable land use.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience working in or with research institutions or within the development sector.
  • Native-level fluency in English is essential; knowledge of French, Spanish, or Indonesian is a distinct advantage.
  • A creative mindset and ability to generate content that resonates across cultures, sectors, and languages.
  • A collaborative leadership style that values inclusivity, cross-cultural sensitivity, and teamwork.

Terms and Conditions of Employment

This is a Globally Recruited Staff (GRS) position, and CIFOR-ICRAF offers a competitive remuneration package denominated in US Dollars. The terms are designed to attract high-quality candidates with global experience.

  • Contract Type: One-year fixed term, including a six-month probationary period. There is potential for extension based on performance and funding availability.
  • Duty Station: Nairobi, Kenya or Bogor, Indonesia. Candidates should be willing to travel internationally as needed.
