The successful candidate will be charged with inspecting, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and key equipment essential to commissary operations.

Job Role: Electrical Technician (Commissary) – Grade 2
The Electrical Technician (Grade 2) will be responsible for the technical inspection, repair, and servicing of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures within assigned Java House commissary locations. The technician will ensure all machines and systems are functional, safe for operation, and comply with safety and food handling standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Preventive and Reactive Maintenance
- Perform routine and emergency maintenance of lighting systems, wiring, and electrical equipment.
- Ensure all assigned electrical systems are in safe and functional working condition.
- Troubleshoot faults and perform necessary repairs promptly to reduce downtime.
2. Technical Inspections
- Conduct regular inspections of lighting and electrical wiring systems.
- Document inspection outcomes, and raise alerts or maintenance requests where necessary.
- Support operational continuity by proactively identifying potential failures.
3. Basic Repairs Across Functions
- Perform minor repairs in plumbing, masonry, and carpentry, especially where these support the functionality of equipment or safety of the facility.
4. Food Safety and Compliance
- Support maintenance efforts that directly affect food safety compliance.
- Identify and mitigate hazards that may compromise food handling standards.
5. Record Keeping and Reporting
- Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities using provided formats.
- Ensure traceability of servicing, inspections, and repairs for future reference and audits.
Key Accountabilities
The role is evaluated based on the following performance metrics:
1. Adherence to Operational Procedures
- Executes all tasks according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to reduce the risk of injury, contamination, or equipment damage.
2. Continuous Improvement and Innovation
- Actively participates in the continuous improvement culture at Java House.
- Identifies and reports areas of inefficiency or waste.
- Proposes initiatives that could translate to cost-savings or improved maintenance outcomes.
3. Incident and Accident Prevention
- Maintains low incident/accident rates through safe practices and diligent inspections.
- Ensures proper and safe use of maintenance tools and systems.
4. Communication and Team Contribution
- Attends and contributes meaningfully to department briefings and communication cascades.
- Provides technical insights and recommendations to colleagues and supervisors.
Core Competencies and Technical Expertise
The Electrical Technician will be expected to demonstrate the following core competencies in their day-to-day functions:
Electrical Proficiency:
- Expert troubleshooting and servicing of single-phase and three-phase wiring systems.
- Full working knowledge of lighting systems, distribution boards, and socket circuits.
Commissary Equipment Expertise:
Proficiency in handling, servicing, and repairing the following specialized commissary equipment is essential:
- Commercial crate washers
- Revent ovens (Model 739 and 724)
- Deck and convectional ovens
- Vacuum sealers
- Meat slicers
- Kitchen hood extraction motors
- Planetary mixers and spiral dough mixers
- Bread moulders and bun divider moulders
- Commercial bread slicers and food processors
- Revent proofers
- Pastry sheeters
General Maintenance Skills:
- Competency in basic plumbing, masonry, and carpentry work.
- Ability to assess minor structural and utility repairs and complete them independently or escalate when necessary.
Communication:
- Clear and professional spoken English and Kiswahili.
- Ability to interpret and relay technical information both verbally and in writing.
- Capable of maintaining accurate records and updating logs in a structured manner.
Special Conditions of Employment
Due to the dynamic nature of commissary operations, the following working conditions apply:
- Work at Heights: Technician must be capable of working safely at elevated heights during maintenance activities.
- Night Shifts: Availability to work during night shifts, which could amount to approximately 20% of monthly working hours.
- Emergency Call-Outs: Occasionally required to respond to maintenance emergencies outside of standard working hours.
Qualifications
- Diploma in Electrical or Electronic Engineering from a recognized institution.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years hands-on experience in electrical maintenance, preferably within a commercial or industrial environment.
- Proven track record working with both general electrical systems and specialized food production equipment in a commissary or hospitality setting.
