This exciting opportunity is tailored for a mature and born-again Christian who demonstrates integrity, professionalism, and a passion for service in a faith-based environment. The successful candidate will support CITAM’s Legal, Audit, Compliance, and Risk functions while also playing a pivotal role in the structuring and operation of the soon-to-be-established CITAM Foundation. The Legal Assistant will also contribute legal expertise in key areas such as conveyancing, intellectual property, and technology-related legal frameworks.

This position is instrumental in ensuring CITAM’s operations remain compliant with applicable legal standards across all its ministries and services, including ICT, media, education, and community outreach. The role will report directly to the in-house Legal Counsel and is based in Kenya.

Position Overview

The Legal Assistant will be responsible for providing professional legal services across multiple domains including compliance, legal audits, corporate risk management, contract review, conveyancing, and emerging areas in intellectual property and technology law. The role demands a high degree of research acumen, drafting skill, attention to detail, and coordination with various internal and external stakeholders.

The candidate must possess a strong ethical foundation and unwavering commitment to CITAM’s statement of faith and mission.

Key Responsibilities

The Legal Assistant will work under the direction of the Legal Counsel to perform a variety of legal functions, which include but are not limited to:

1. Legal Audit and Compliance Support

  • Assist in conducting legal audits and reviews to ensure organizational compliance with regulatory and internal policies.
  • Perform risk assessments and identify areas of potential legal vulnerability.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and implementation of compliance registers.
  • Support the preparation and submission of regulatory reports in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Monitor developments in legislation and assess their impact on CITAM’s operations.

2. Legal Documentation and Policy Drafting

  • Draft, review, and revise legal instruments such as contracts, agreements, memoranda of understanding (MOUs), and policy documents.
  • Ensure that all legal documentation aligns with CITAM’s internal procedures and external legal requirements.
  • Assist in contract management and keep proper records of executed agreements.

3. Support in Establishing the CITAM Foundation

  • Provide legal support in structuring, registering, and operationalizing the CITAM Foundation.
  • Offer guidance on regulatory and statutory obligations for non-profit organizations.
  • Liaise with government and non-governmental bodies to secure necessary approvals and certifications.

4. Conveyancing and Property Management Legal Support

  • Participate in due diligence processes related to property transactions.
  • Draft and review sale agreements, lease documents, and title deeds.
  • Coordinate with external legal counsel, land registries, and surveyors to facilitate registration and documentation of land and property.
  • Maintain an updated inventory of all CITAM land and property records.

5. Intellectual Property (IP) Management

  • Support the protection and enforcement of CITAM’s IP rights, including trademarks, copyrights, and domain names.
  • Conduct research on IP issues and ensure timely registration and renewal of IP assets.
  • Collaborate with relevant departments to ensure licensing and usage of intellectual assets are legally sound.

6. Technology, Media, and Telecommunications (TMT) Legal Advisory

  • Offer basic legal counsel on matters related to digital platforms, software licensing, and online content distribution.
  • Provide advisory on data protection and privacy laws applicable to CITAM’s digital operations.
  • Support the ICT, Communications, and Media teams in ensuring legal compliance of online content and data systems.
  • Review contracts with technology service providers, media partners, and software vendors.

7. Legal Research and Advisory

  • Conduct thorough legal research and prepare comprehensive briefs, legal opinions, and position papers.
  • Interpret and analyze statutes, regulations, court rulings, and legal articles relevant to CITAM’s mission and operations.
  • Assist the Legal Counsel in preparing documentation for board meetings, legal proceedings, or regulatory submissions.

8. Internal Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with other departments such as HR, Finance, Communications, and Projects to ensure integrated compliance and risk mitigation.
  • Represent the Legal Unit in relevant internal meetings and cross-functional task forces.
  • Promote a culture of legal awareness and compliance through training and information sharing.

9. Additional Responsibilities

  • Uphold CITAM’s Christian values and code of conduct in all work-related interactions and decisions.
  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion and integrity.
  • Perform any other legal duties as may be delegated by the Legal Counsel from time to time.

Key Qualifications and Experience

Applicants for this role must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must be a born-again Christian, mature in faith, and in full agreement with the CITAM statement of faith.
  • Hold a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from a recognized and accredited university.
  • Be an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in good standing.
  • Possess at least three (3) years of relevant post-admission legal experience.
  • Demonstrate sound knowledge of compliance, conveyancing, intellectual property, and basic technology-related legal frameworks.
  • Exhibit excellent drafting, research, and communication skills.
  • Show proficiency in IT tools and platforms used in legal and administrative work.
  • Prior experience in working with a non-profit, religious, or community-based organization is an added advantage.
